In this interactive session, Maya Shah, Senior Early Careers Specialist at Ropes & Gray, will walk you through every stage of the firm's application process.
Willkie’s new graduate recruiter and two trainees will break down what the firm looks for at the interview stage, common pitfalls to avoid,
and how you can demonstrate confidence, clarity, and genuine motivation throughout an assessment centre.
I'll be honest in saying it is hard to prepare for the written assessment unless you know the very specific subject/topic of the assessment - but even then, firms tend to either have 1) multiple versions of the exercises and so you could never be sure of what topic you will get and 2) some firms...
Haha - I always thought that would be super boring, but I'll have a think about how something like this might help the TCLA community understand how GR teams work (without it sounding like a massive whinge 🤣)
March 11 is no time at all for many law firms, especially at the moment while so many people are off work due to Covid.
7 weeks feels like 7 hours to graduate recruitment and 7 years to a candidate 😂
I’d be honest and talk about your passions - that doesn’t have to be intellectual. It just has to be the things you love dedicating time and/or effort to.
It usually has two start dates - one in Jan/Feb and one in Aug/Sept - if anything I would expect the September course to be the more popular of the two and so if they got rid of one intake, I’d expect it to be the winter one over the summer/autumn one.
I want to be honest with you but I truly believe this is the best advice I can give you now - I think trying to prepare now at this late stage won't be helpful to you.
I recommend instead you get a good night's sleep, rest up and take it easy. Anything I would recommend in terms of preparation...
Technically it is neither.
A competency question would be a “tell me about a time you have developed X skill”
While a motivation question on this topic would be “Which other firms have you applied to and how are we better than them”
This question is really just assessing your knowledge and...
If you have a cover letter, a statement isn’t needed. What you’d need to say would be in the cover letter.
This thread might be useful in terms of CV format:

When I worked in-house, I used to dream all the time that I organised campus recruitment events in my bedroom while I was asleep. So I’d dream 100s of people were watching me sleep. Graduate Recruitment makes you insane too 😂
If the question is asking you why a London vs Regional firm, then yes that is fine. If it is asking you why city law, then that’s slightly different as you have a whole range of firms in London that are not city law firms.
A lot of people are not geographically mobile - many people just want to work for regional firms because they want to stay in that region. And that is a very legitimate reason why you would apply for a regional firm over a city firm. It’s the same reason why people will choose a city firm over a...
Consider it more like a collective weighting. Someone with a low 2.1 will probably need more evidence elsewhere compared to someone with a high 2.1. But both candidates need to show other evidence - and where academics tend to be a relatively minor element in an application, that other evidence...
Don't worry - we don't think there are any stupid questions in this forum, and it's a legitimate question to ask.
You should state yes as you have applied to the firm before.
I see it enough to know it can work.
However, when it does work, it typically has balance with other aspects of their application and/or an understanding that this isn’t always the case. More successful candidates explain also what they mean by positively impacting society (which in itself is a...
You have to tread carefully even when they do have these great opportunities.
1) A trainee pro bono secondment is unlikely to be helping people directly. You will be helping the corporate entity behind the charity. The work you will be doing will feel very “corporate” - the work an in house...
You can use the Uber case in your application. Just be mindful that this is often quite a popular story to talk about, so I think you’ll have to ensure you talk about this well and really show your analysis to stand out from the crowd.
It looks like the Insight programme is a good route to take...
Applying via an agency (for which the law society are acting as) like this is common.
There are a few of these agencies and it does get around the process of the firm having to get a licence. However, it isn’t necessarily straight forward as it means you have to be employed by the licence...
