I don't think there is a right or wrong answer here - you have to weigh up what works best for you. Enough people will secure a TC without a clear connection/experience with the firm though. Wouldn't the winter scheme give you an opportunity to secure a TC earlier though?- TCLA Community Assistant

Help please! Withdrawing TC offer after LPC
It’s probably happened to me about 6 times in my career. Each time was dealt with very differently. If it’s happened to me, there must be a number of other recruiters it has happened to, and I reckon there must be a handful of people every six months across firms that do this.- TCLA Community Assistant

Help please! Withdrawing TC offer after LPC
I have worked at firms where you paid it off in monthly instalments. I had someone do this after doing the GDL and LPC and they had over £30k worth of repayments, which were spread over 7 years (basically £350 a month). Applying skills to trainee role
For the example you have mentioned above, I would try to be more specific than communication skills are this is a broad range of skills (verbal, written, influencing, directing, presentation skills, etc). It’s not an expectation as such. Firms recruit non-law grads with no commercial law modules, and so it isn’t a necessity to have them. My personal view is that this is no different to people considering to self fund the LPC. You just have to weigh up whether your personal circumstances are one where you can take the financial hit in the short term in the hope it will help you with longer term goals.
