TCLA Vacation Scheme Applications Discussion Thread 2021-22 (#1)

A general structure I think works: 1) explain why you picked that story - this question/interview is about you after all 2) summary (and definitely a summary) of the story itself 3) your analysis on why it happened (actually much more important than 2) 4) your analysis on how it may change...

There’s no guarantee of it - will be completely down to the individual firm’s circumstances at the time and whether they need to top up earlier intake/don’t have a waiting list already if other applicants who want to start earlier. So it’s impossible to say what the chance is. At the point of...

Talking about a deal at interview

Be prepared to talk about why you choose that specific deal out of the 100s of other you could have chosen. Also be prepared to talk about how/why things happened rather than them actually happening.

    Advice about self-funding the SQE

By the time they don’t offer people who don’t meet the benchmark and then people decline their offers for other firms, 60 out of 100 is actually quite achievable.

That tone isn’t tolerated here. I recommend reading our terms and rules here: https://www.thecorporatelawacademy.com/forum/help/terms/ Not everyone on this forum is a prospective trainee/trying to apply for TCs, and if you had read the advice given from various people, you would see that not...

Then it sounds like applying for a direct TC is the best approach if you could get other offers this winter.

I don't think you are too late. I'll bet they haven't received half of their applications yet.

I don't think there is a right or wrong answer here - you have to weigh up what works best for you. Enough people will secure a TC without a clear connection/experience with the firm though. Wouldn't the winter scheme give you an opportunity to secure a TC earlier though?

TCLA General Discussion Thread 2021-22 (#1)

    I don’t think it’s necessarily an either/or - both could be used.

TCLA Vacation Scheme Applications Discussion Thread 2021-22 (#1)

Some firms aren’t worried about your motivations as they can assess that at the following interview stages. If you really wanted to, you could put some motivational aspects in the extra info question, but it is explicitly asking about details of your “qualifications” so it would need to be...

Help please! Withdrawing TC offer after LPC

It’s probably happened to me about 6 times in my career. Each time was dealt with very differently. If it’s happened to me, there must be a number of other recruiters it has happened to, and I reckon there must be a handful of people every six months across firms that do this.

Help please! Withdrawing TC offer after LPC

I have worked at firms where you paid it off in monthly instalments. I had someone do this after doing the GDL and LPC and they had over £30k worth of repayments, which were spread over 7 years (basically £350 a month). I have known other firms where you will need to repay it fairly immediately...

Exactly. Really is dependent on the rest of your profile and how it fits in though.

    Applying skills to trainee role

For the example you have mentioned above, I would try to be more specific than communication skills are this is a broad range of skills (verbal, written, influencing, directing, presentation skills, etc). You are right in suggesting you will need to link the skills back to what a trainee does...

It’s not an expectation as such. Firms recruit non-law grads with no commercial law modules, and so it isn’t a necessity to have them. They don’t require postgraduate study either (obviously excluding the LPC/GDL - but even those aren’t needed for much longer) so even a PG course isn’t a...

Not necessary to include a breakdown if it’s being included elsewhere, but I might try to keep any highlights in (eg any particularly strong module results/electives related to the firm’s type of work).

It doesn’t need to be linked to Gowling specifically. It’s just looking for you to consider the aspects that are important for a pitch.

Redirected to Vacation Scheme from Training Contract Application?

I’d just stick to the TC now you have applied.

    Advice about self-funding the SQE

My personal view is that this is no different to people considering to self fund the LPC. You just have to weigh up whether your personal circumstances are one where you can take the financial hit in the short term in the hope it will help you with longer term goals. The risk could pay off...
