Career changer - straight to TC?

That's great news! I'm glad you have sent an app off that you are happy with. Hogan Lovells ask some different questions so I can imagine you spent a lot of time, thought and effort into getting your answers in great shape. I can assure you - with every application you make, it gets easier. You...

Career changer - straight to TC?

Hey all, Just adding my 2c here - I am a career-changer and I have secured a TC in my first cycle of applications. It can of course be done! If you have any specific questions, feel free to fire them over. I think what the recruiters were most interested in my end was "Why Commercial law now?"...

    Career Change Success Stories

The only way I narrowed firms down were those who I wanted to work for and those who I didn't. I didn't really consider whether they would be "more receptive" to career changers. Ultimately, if a firm wants you, they want you! I'd really just look at what type of law you are interested in...

    Career Change Success Stories

It is as if this post was made for me! :) As a brief bit of background - I was a Detective in the Police prior to embarking on this journey. Before that, I had some classic "young" jobs in shops, etc/ I was able to prove my commitment to law, firstly from my "obvious" interest in the law from...

    Commercial Awareness - Podcast Thread

Excellent stuff. For reference, in last years CC Case Study, there was a section on retail that covered things such as CVA's, Mike Ashley, etc. This simply reinforces what @Alice G has said :)

    Herbert Smith Freehills App

Just to reiterate a point I made previously in this thread. I had a lot of engagement with HSF. The "topic" question does not need to be commercial, it is there to provide you with an opportunity to write about something persuasively (their words). There's no need to overthink this question...

    Deciding between training contracts

Late to the party here! I would pick Freshfields if the following are important to you: - More variety in your TC - Excellence in both Corporate and Litigious work In my view - This is really what makes FF stand out in the MC. I didn't apply to LL so my knowledge of the firm is restricted to...

    Best Free Business/Commercial Law App

I'll stretch the "app" request here. If you were to use... a podcast app... you could add these to app and get them to be a part of your day :) https://thecorporatelawacademy.com/forum/threads/commercial-awareness-podcast-thread.2182/

    General Discussion Thread 2020-21

I won't be starting my TC until I'm 35 - There's lots of time guys. Just remember - we are all likely to work until 60 or so... just think how many years that is left :)

    Deferring TC start date?

My only consideration would be how this affects your particular firm's qualification route. To note, my firm is running LPC entry for 2022, but SQE entry for 2023, which requires an additional 4 months of study as the strict SQE Prep Courses do not cover the additional material required to be...

A rough estimate of when firms applications open

Ignore all the colours and such. I was trying to track the applications that were coming up etc etc. I haven't touched it since last year!

    General Discussion Thread 2020-21

I highly recommend simply engaging with the firm. See if they are running webinars etc. You'll soon get a feel for where their strength is and who they perceive their competitors to be. This will increase your understanding of that area of the market.

A rough estimate of when firms applications open

There's a fair bit of redundant information on there, please use as a guide only. I don't think I can bring myself to collate all this again this year when I'm not applying :)

A rough estimate of when firms applications open

I've seen quite a few people posting on the forum, asking when applications open for X firm. There is no substitute for looking for yourself. Other than that, you are waiting on a website to collate the information for you. If this helps, here are last year's dates.

Finding out when vac schemes are open?

If there is a website that lists them, they too have gone through the "tedious" process of finding it out. Sometimes, you just have to put the graft in. Here are the dates from last year that I collated.
