Has anyone been rejected from Bird & Bird post-WG? Didn't feel like the WG went too well and didn't get a VI invite when others did last week so not sure if I still have any hope of a VI haha :)

I'm currently trying to complete the CMS VS application - one of the questions asks 'How would you describe the relationship between business and law'. I don't know why but I honestly cannot write 200 words on this question. I've just generally written about how the law and business are symbiotic (that's literally like a quarter of the word count).
I was thinking of writing about a specific innovative business and how the law/ law firms have supported its development. Honestly not sure if that is even relevant though lol.

Any guidance on this would be greatly appreciated :)

I wouldn't discuss a specific innovative business/the role of law firms here, unless it's directly relevant to the question.

Questions you might want to think about:
    - Is business and law always symbiotic?
    - How does the law benefit businesses?
    - How does the law hinder businesses?
    - How does business influence the law?

I was trying to answer this AG question:
Please choose a current COVID related legal issue and describe how this may be impacting the legal sector and specifically Addleshaw Goddard

Do you think it's ok for me to talk about the fact that the legal sector has to make a change in terms of client interaction? Law firms really value face-to-face client interaction, but now that it's not an option, it may have negative effects on client relations and also on lawyers, as they may feel that they have to work harder to maintain their client relationships. I was also going to bring in AG's specialism in the retail sector, and mention that bc they have clients that also rely on face-to-face interactions w their client/customers, AG would have to advise them accordingly

    Is this a 'legal issue'?

Looking at the question strictly, this strikes me as more of a commercial issue, rather than a COVID-related legal issue. That said, I would flag that I haven't seen many answers on this yet.

I received the VI invite last week as well. Hope there's still positive news for you.

    Hi Jaysen
Yeah - that was my worry! Does anyone have any ideas for what I should be doing? I don't really understand what they want from me if it's not COVID impacts on legal issues?

I'd approach it by picking a sector that interests you and see what impact Covid is having on that specific sector, be that opportunities for growth or challenges. Might be worth looking at a few news articles to get you thinking!

    Thanks, Alison!

This is great - I'll have a think!

But you don't think I need to be talking specifically about AG too much?
Hi - sorry, missed your reply. And I can't see the original question, but my suspicion is they don't want you to gush - nor to tell them stuff they already know about themselves. The more you can find out what D&I they are doing, and why that appeals to YOU, great. But this is also a question about the changing world - why the legal profession (which is WAY behind the public sector on this one) needs to move with the times and what that looks like; also how you will fit in in a team which might potentially include a range of genders, sexual orientations, degrees of disability, ethnic backgrounds etc etc.

    Hope that helps!

thanks for this info celestie! does make me feel slightly better. Literally spent a full weekend feeling like crap after being rejected (even though I've been practicing) :(

No worries at all. Dont ever take the WG personal - it is something a lot of senior partners (that I have spoken to) have advised me to avoid as it is a easy way for firms to filter out great applicants. I recommend firms like A&O or Taylor Wessing which use different online testing. You are doing great and don't let CMS pull you down.
