2020-21 Vacation Scheme Applications Discussion

I mean as a result of Covid and all the redundancies that people have been given especially in grad roles in other industries, sadly that's to be expected. This is going to be the most competitive recruitment cycle for a long time unfortunately :(

Out of interest, what stage of the application cycle do you think will be affected by this? Will firms proportionally increase the amount of applicants they invite to, say, VIs and ACs to reflect the number of applications, or do you think it will be harder to get through to these stages this year?

Yeah, it isn't a surprise. Just isn't what you want to hear when you're anxiously waiting to hear back...

For anyone that's not seen the Reed Smith thread...they've emailed to apologise and say that my responses were received. I imagine others will have received this too. Panic over!

Kirkland AC!!!! Same day as my mishcon case study so will have to sort something out hahahah
Fantastic, well done!

Back in the day, in my Kirkland AC, the interviewer told me that she cried every night for the first few months at the firm. She then asked me how I'd cope 😀

It's probably changed now but we also had to pick a person/fictional character and justify why they were best equipped to run a company (to the rest of the group).

Me @ Richard Capper from Hill Dickinson saying at a Legal Cheek event that they've had even more applications this year than previous years.

He then said in the booth that a large proportion of their TCs go to internal staff members... if you’re passionate about their areas of specialism though, none of that matters as you will get through if you try hard enough :)

A good event overall!!!!

On a separate note, I am BUZZING for all of you with Kirkland ACs ❤️ Congrats!!!

From what I heard, firms aren’t increasing the number of people interviewed etc.
Personally, I do wonder why in light of vac schemes being done online, firms don’t do more vac schemes or offer more places? I do understand that the number of TC in the end are most likely the same as previous years, but vac schemes are so important that firms could have easily increased their capacity at least until things go back to what they used to (if they ever do).

Anyone else having difficulties with Pinsent Masons testing software and received a reply from them? I sent them an email but perhaps someone has already had a response here which might help me anticipate what to do.

For reference the issue I am having is the software can only be downloaded on a Windows processor, which I don't have access to. I am also concerned that they provided a deadline of less than 48 hours.
I have the same problem and have just emailed GR. Not sure what to do if they don't respond before the deadline at 3 on Friday!

Guys, last year I didn't get past one VI and this week I've received 2 post-VI ACs!!

I actually cannot believe it hahahaha

my biggest advice would be to film yourself and watch it back. Hadn't done that until this year and realised I sounded IMPRESSIVELY bored and you could clearly see I was reading notes lol serves me right tbf

Surely a lot of firms would be trying to cut costs at the moment meaning they’d lower the number of vac scheme places? Sidley winter vac scheme was lowered in numbers and I suspect a similar thing to happen for spring but I’m not 100% sure
