Hi Jaysen, thanks for this. I'm not entirely sure how to phrase this in a call. I'm very attracted to the firm that has offered me a training contract. But I want to do other VSs as it will be beneficial to my career/ ultimate seat choices.

I suggest being honest with exactly this information: that you think it will be beneficial to your career. This won't be the first time the firm has heard this.

I'd just be prepared that the firm will say: if you know you really like us, why don't you just accept the TC?

It's okay to explain your reasoning, though. Ultimately, it's always worth asking in these situations and there's a reasonable amount of flexibility for what they might be willing to do.

Hi, I totally get your concern! I imagine this is about an upcoming VS. I do think that putting yourself out there is important, as law firms are very people centric. Coffee chats demonstrate a few things - that you are proactive, interested in the firm and its work, and that you’re willing to leave your comfort zone. These are all things that firms look for in trainees. That being said, in my vac schemes I went on very few coffee chats compared to my peers, and still converted. By very few, I mean around 3/4 total. It definitely helps to start by inviting your own supervisor and trainee buddy for a chat, as conversations flow easily due to the nature of your relationship and them seeking to give you advice, etc. I would say that during the VS you should naturally develop an interest in some practice areas, but this doesn’t need to be why you go for a coffee chat. For me, the chats I arranged were not because I was purely interested in the person’s work (although this should come up at some point in the chat!) but rather their background. I am international, so I was naturally drawn to international people at the firms. I think you get the gist, but I’d try to find people you are personally interested in speaking with, as this will make the conversation flow much better. I would try to avoid asking someone for a coffee chat just for the sake of it - I think this can come off as a bit arrogant and lead to some mechanic conversations. So be intentional with it but also don’t stress too much, as you can always ask your supervisor/ buddy for help with these situations. And remember that all of them have been in your position before and know and empathise with what you’re going through, so be kind to yourself ! I am a firm believer of quality over quantity - I think associates are not required to give feedback post vac scheme unless they want to, in which case, if you’ve developed a bond, they are likely to and that’s an extra! Hope this helps.

I will definitely have to put myself out there and try to diminish my anxiety around the process and try to enjoy the talks. I will definitely ask my trainee buddy for their advice as they have most recently of course gone through the process. I will do some research into who I would be interested to speak too as I agree that having one for the sake of it would be quite painful for both of us haha.

Hi guys... I am in a bit of a predicament and wondering what is the best course of action...

So I recieved my VS offer yesterday from Firm B, during the call I explained how I am waiting to hear back from another firm post AC, as they have a clash across one week meaning I need to choose one over the other. Grad Rec were so understanding, however, emphasised that they would need a responce by 5PM tomorrow as onboarding process begins on Monday.

The firm I am waiting on is my first choice, location, practice areas, general culture! However, Firm B are still a top firm of mine and I am really grateful to even be in this sort of predicament. Are you allowed to accept, and then withdraw your place?

We have been told to expect a responce no later week commencing 11th May. If next week, I am extremely fortunate and recieve an offer, is it okay to contact Firm B and let them know I am no longer avaliable for the week I have been allocated to?

I completely understand I may not even be in this situaton and could face a rejection post - ac, however, if I was lucky enough I would want to take the other firms vacation scheme but equally do not want to miss the chance to attend the Firm B one as it would be my first vacation scheme and I do genunely have an interest in the firm and it would be an amazing oppurtunity.

Any insights or advice will be greatly appreciated and valued, whatever they may be! Thank you sm

I personally would accept the Firm B offer as you are still waiting on the result of your AC and if your get the pther VS, I would withdraw as early as possible from Firm B. You probably would not be able to reapply at Firm B for a TC but ultimately this is your career so don't take any risk, accept and withdraw if needed (they would probably take someone else from the reserve list if that happened).

Yes I'd take this as annual leave.

One thing to be aware of is that they could say no to the dates you'd like to take leave. This is why I think it is better to tell them upfront that you've already got these dates booked out. But personally I'd wait until you get the offer to tell them (and then tell them straight away).

You can probably just take annual leave (if asked why maybe say a previously arranged engagement or something like that). I wouldn’t outright lie e.g. medical procedure, cause this could come back as dishonest behaviour in the future

Hey everyone!

I am really confused by written exercise- how do you know if you should use a memo or an email when you have a a client. I did a memo, but they didn’t say which format to use. They just said write your answer in a MS word or in a body of email or similar. I thought memo would be better as we can have the executive summary and explain the points better structured.

Nothing to do with SQE, but this was a fun event that expanded my legal horizons...

I spent yesterday at the Inner Temple volunteering with the archive team. I had a fascinating interview with a KC who is a leading expert on sexual violence, and the barristers made me very confident in my decision to follow the solicitor route - it might be hard to find a TC, but pupilage sounds even more challenging!
