TCLA Vacation Scheme Applications Discussion Thread 2026-27

Hi

I am really sorry to hear that - I know it is disappointing, especially after putting so much into the vac scheme.

If it is any reassurance, I was in a similar position last cycle. I completed a few vacation schemes but didn't convert any of them into TCs, but I ended up applying to my firm through the direct TC route afterwards and was successful. Not converting a vac scheme definitely doesn't mean the end of the road (although I can appreciate it doesn't always feel that way in the moment).

One thing I would really recommend is requesting feedback if the firm offers it. Even if it is quite high level, it can help you identify areas to work on before your next applications or interviews. It's really important to highlight the areas that still need improvement and work on those directly - whilst I was never asked during the DTC process about not converting my vac schemes, I was prepared to explain how I had taken on the previous feedback and improved, as this is what they'll want to hear if they ever ask (as they can appreciate that non-conversion doesn't mean you aren't capable).

As you are about to start the law conversion, I would also see that as a great opportunity. You'll have another year to strengthen your applications, build your commercial awareness, attend firm events, and refine your interview technique. I'd also consider applying to a mix of vacation schemes and direct TCs as well, as it can open up more opportunities. Your vacation scheme might have also shaped your motivations in a clearer way, which can allow you to have a more focused strategy when it comes to applying.

Most importantly, try not to let one outcome knock your confidence. Resilience and perseverance is half of the battle in these processes, and it is important to make sure you keep going and learn/improve along the way. Getting onto a vacation scheme is an incredible achievement in itself, and you have already shown you can get through a competitive process.

Wishing you all the best with the law conversion and the next application cycle! :)
Hi Abbie,

Thanks for such a detailed response, I really appreciate it!

Just one more question, did having vac schemes on your CV improve your applications for the next cycle? I’m in two minds about whether not converting will worsen my applications or whether it’ll strengthen them. Thanks!
