How ambitious should I be with my VS applications?

Hi all,

Some background: I'm going into the final year of my LLB at a mid-RG uni (Uni of Nottingham). 2020-21 was my first application cycle; I applied unsuccessfully to ~20 firms ranging from MC to National Firms' regional offices. Having discovered the TCLA and JMR only a few weeks ago, I now know why I was unsuccessful. I did not do enough research into the firms I applied to, application technique, and wider business awareness. Truthfully, I severely underestimated how difficult it is to get a VS.

This has left me at a bit of an impasse as to the upcoming application cycle. I want to focus on writing high quality applications to a lower quantity of firms; however, the low quality of my applications last cycle has made it difficult to pinpoint how ambitious I should be with regards to the level of firms I apply to this cycle (hence this post).

My biggest priority this cycle is to secure a VS by any means and then (hopefully) a TC through the VS or by direct application to a different firm. I also want to train in London (I live there), but I am willing to compromise on this. Essentially, I am willing to compromise on anything to secure a TC before the end of my third year.

My grades are OK; I got a mid-2.1 overall in my first year and 68 overall in my second year (got a first in 2 modules but was brought down by a low 2.1 in one module). However, my work experience and extracurriculars are sub-par at best. I've done 1 open day (at BCLP), virtual internships (legal cheek, bright network), and a couple of Forage courses. I'm general secretary of a committee at uni, and I play team sports and a couple of instruments . This is no excuse, but repeated lockdowns and subsequent VS rejections adversely affected my motivation. As a result, I wasted my second year at university when I could have been doing activities to boost my applications. I am already trying to change this, but I feel it might be a bit too late to do in time for this cycle.

Currently, my list of potential firms to apply to consists of mostly national (Eversheds, Pinsent Masons etc.), mid-tier (Reed Smith, Bird and Bird etc.), and a couple of SC firms (BCLP and Dentons). I selected these from a balance of entry requirements, total TCs, Oxbridge/RG/Other trainee ratio, and training areas I am interested in.

Am I being too ambitious or not ambitious enough? Is my criteria for selecting firms appropriate? Is it realistic for me to expect to get a TC by the end of the academic year?

Thanks in advance!

Terms of Training Contract

Hi all,
I’ve just received my training contract offer to sign and it seems that although my firm will pay my LPC fees - it’s done retrospectively once I start in September 2022. I.e I need to foot the bill outright initially…

How common is this? I now find myself looking around for that spare £20k I left lying around…

Graduated from RG with a first and a vac scheme (did not convert) - is it crazy to do a one year course in economics?

Graduated with a first from a good university. Have a vac scheme, open days, insight scheme and brand ambassador role under my belt but never managed to get any other vac scheme or direct TC ACs, which might have had to do with me not polishing my apps due to a slight uncertainty whether law is for me. Clearly, I am capable of doing well in the subject both academically and professionally, but now that I have graduated I am not so sure. I have been advised to self-fund for the LPC (I would be able to afford this) but recently became aware of (and gained an offer for) a Graduate Diploma Course in Economics at Birkbeck. I think it would be a great idea to do something slightly different for a year, and although I definitely feel like I would want to do law in the future, I would regret not exploring something else for a year. Let's say I discover law ultimately is what I want to do for a career - would it be dumb to do this economics course? Let's say I keep applying for vacs/TCs the following year while doing the economics course - would this be viewed badly by law firms?

Thanks!

Looking for flatmates in London

Moving to London to start the LPC at BPP Holborn in January before starting training contract in September. Looking for flatmates - ideally people who will be doing / are doing the GDL, LPC or current trainees - so thought I would throw it out there in case anyone is looking for somebody or knows others that are looking.

Would be open to moving from November if something is available sooner but of course happy to wait until nearer to January as well.

Feel free to shoot me a message. Cheers!

Selling Applications

Hi everyone,
I've been lucky enough to secure a TC this cycle after a lot of hard work on my applications. But I am now stressing about being able to afford to live over the next few years whilst I'm studying. I hope this post isn't at odds with TCLA and the amazing work that they do, but I was wondering what people think about selling my successful applications privately? It wouldn't be for a lot of money, and it would obviously allow me to use all of the hours I had put into it. I would just worry that it would be seen as dodgy by the firm, and I obviously wouldn't want anything to jeopardise my TC, I was just hoping to hear people's opinions?

Bonjour from France :)

Hi everyone,

My name is Emilia, i am a french native (born in Paris) but have lived in the UK for 5 years now.

One thing about me? I love "Mamma mia" and can watch it 10 times, and i hate cheese (i know a french that hate cheese is horrible don't kill me ahah).

Apart from that, i graduated last year with a double degree in English law and French law at the University of Westminster and will graduate soon in my LLM of International Business Law at QMUL.

My experience: they mainly stem from Paris, i worked as an inhouse-legal intern in a Credit Insurance Company and then was an IP and Corporate M&A paralegal in International law firms in Paris. The reason why i applied to TCLA was to enhance my understanding of expectations of recruiters in written applications, interviews but also because i feel like this group seems very supportive and i love that!

But anyway, i am very happy to be in this group and looking forward to interacting with some of you. :)

SQE ROUTE

Hi everyone!

I've been working as a paralegal at a US law firm for the past 2 years and I am thinking of doing the SQE1 exam in November 2021. At the moment, I can see two prep providers who are offering SQE1 exam prep starting this month - University of Law and Barbri. Is anyone else thinking of enrolling in either prep course?

I'm a law graduate and planning on taking the SQE1 prep and working at the same time - anyone in a similar situation?

@Jessica Booker - do you think MC/SC law firms will be open to taking on SQE qualified lawyers as NQs next year?

Thanks!
