SQE without the PGDL?

Hi everyone!

I’m hoping someone can make it a bit clearer for me…

So I have a TC offer from one US firm that will allow me to do the GDL/LPC route. I have completed a vac scheme at another US firm which will be doing the SQE route but not funding non-law grads to do the GDL, meaning future trainees essentially have a year off and then do a month of ‘GDL’ content and then a year of SQE prep and exams. I don’t have an offer for the second vac scheme at the moment but I just wanted to know people’s opinions.

It would make me a bit nervous to take these SQE exams with just one year of education, so my question is whether the GDL is actually necessary for the SQE exams? The firm in question are convinced that the GDL is unnecessary, but I can’t understand why the majority of other firms would still require it. Any advice would be appreciated !

LPC - doing slighty worse in the electives than the core modules

Hello everyone,

I have a perhaps unusual question that I can't see posted anywhere, wondering if anybody knows this or can share any articles which might cover this?

Long story short, I've finished the LPC and, I'm very happy to say, I've got a Distinction (confetti emoji goes here!)
I got Distinctions for all my core modules, and for my M&A elective.
However, for Commercial Disputes and IP I got a Commendation for both (62% and 66% respectively).

I know that this is still a really good score, and I'm delighted with it, truth be told.

I'm wondering, however: will firms think less of me for this when applying for TCs etc?
I recall reading/hearing how firms like "consistency" with grades.
Also, as I'm very keen on an IP seat, and fear this may count against me.

Perhaps this is a rather niche question, hence I can't seem to find an answer here or online, but wondered if anyone has any experience of this they would be able to share?

Many thanks and happy Friday!

D

Hello

Hi,

I am a law graduate, keen to improve my application technique, through the tools available on TCLA.

In my second year of university, I had one vacation scheme, and this was with a small, high-street firm. I am now seeking a vacation scheme with an international law firm, in London.

I will be focussing on vacation scheme applications, because I feel I do not have enough legal work experience to apply for a direct TC.

At the moment, I am researching law firms, and gathering notes before I begin writing applications!

Competing TC start dates problem - any advice?

Hello good people of tcla,

Basically I’ve got a problem with competing start dates, could really do with some advice. For context, I finished the PGDL this year. Essentially:

  1. Firm (1) have offered me March 2023 TC start, via LPC route.
  2. Firm (2) have offered me 2023 start, but refuse to confirm until several months after I’ve signed whether it will be March or September. What’s more, if they allocate me September, I will have to do the SQE route rather than LPC. We’re allowed to state a preference on our form when we sign, but we have no power beyond that.
Both are great firms, and I would be happy with either one — but I probably would prefer Firm (2) if push came to shove. However, I’m already relatively old, have moved out of Uni & parents etc. with bills to pay, so I want to start my TC as soon as possible. Moreover, I really don’t want to do the SQE if I can avoid it, and Firm (1)’s offer guarantees that.

So I’m not sure how to play it. Grad Rec for (2) are adamant that they can’t promise me a start date before I sign. They say that, if I have compelling reasons for the March start, then I will likely get it when the allocate them a few months from now — but I’m still worried if I sign I will get screwed over by the later start date. Any tips?

Thanks, and apologies for the convoluted question.

GDL results and TC applications

Hi everyone!

I just got my GDL results and while most of the grades are 2:1 (with firsts in EU and Tort), my Contract and Public Law are mid 2:2. The overall grade is Commendation (66) but after hearing how important the Contract Law grade is, I am worried this may affect my future applications.

Given that my performance at undergrad was not perfect (RG, got mid 2:1 overall but with a few 2:2s in the first and second year and failed condonable dissertation in the third year), I am contemplating whether I should apply for an August resit or focus on preparing for the next application cycle instead.

Any opinions/advice would be very much appreciated!

TCLA Mission Statement and Updated Terms and Rules 2021

Hey everyone,

As we move closer to the new application cycle, we have added a mission statement to the TCLA forum and revised our terms and rules. We will also shortly send an alert requiring everyone to review the updated terms and rules before carrying on in the forum.

Why are we doing this?

We have an incredible community here where members are kind to each other and support one another in their journeys. Many of you bond because you have faced challenges in your journey so far and yet you still strive to succeed. As we grow, our mission statement underlines the vision we have for the TCLA forum and the values we aim to uphold. I will repost this below and would recommend reading this first.

Our updated terms and rules are in place to help us to uphold the values in our mission statement. It's also there to ensure the TCLA forum remains a safe and supportive environment for aspiring lawyers. Where disagreements arise, we want to make sure that members can concentrate on the content, rather than the individuals. We also want to make sure our members don't have to face trolling, spam, self-promotional content, harassment, and much more.

The TCLA forum is an actively managed forum. Whether it's removing spam, deleting inappropriate content or stepping in to guide disputes, our Community Managers are active day-to-day to make sure you can focus on receiving useful advice and reassurance in your journey to becoming commercial lawyers. We know that sometimes members may disagree with decisions being made (particularly when disputes do arise), and we only ask that you respect that we have forum rules in place for a reason.

If anyone has any questions about this, please feel free to drop me a PM. Otherwise, thank you to all of you for helping to make the TCLA forum so special.

Thank you also to @Alice G, @Jessica Booker, @Jacob Miller and @Dheepa for your work throughout the forum and for assisting with these rules.

The TCLA Forum Mission Statement

TCLA is the largest dedicated forum for aspiring lawyers. Our mission is to help aspiring lawyers, from students to trainees, become the best version of themselves.

As we grow, we want to support every aspiring lawyer interested in a career in the City, while staying true to our values.

Those values are:
  1. Kindness
  2. Exceptional quality
  3. Authenticity
  4. Curiosity
  5. Original thinking

1. Kindness

The journey to becoming a commercial lawyer can be exceedingly tough. For many, it means overcoming rejection and self-doubt, and entering a world that many won’t have prior experience with.

The goal of TCLA here is to serve as a place of refuge. We want our members to feel exceptionally welcomed and supported. If you’re new to the process and ask an obvious question, we’re not going to tell you it’s silly – we’re going to appreciate that everyone started somewhere.

To be kind also means to be strict with anyone who is unkind. In the TCLA forum, we don’t tolerate overt rudeness, putting people down, or attacks on personal character. We won’t hesitate to warn and ban anyone who falls foul of these rules because they breach our most fundamental value and harm the community as a whole. Equally, this applies to us. We strive to show kindness in all of our interactions.

To be kind also means we have to provide tough advice at times. We strive to do so delicately when we know it is in the best interests of our members.

2. Exceptional quality

We strive to make TCLA a source of exceptional advice. This means that no matter where a member is located - or their education, background, connections or circumstances - they have access to the best information in the legal market through the TCLA forum. Our advice never rests on helping you to become ‘good enough’, we focus on helping our members to become exceptional.

3. Authenticity

We value truth. TCLA is a place for aspiring lawyers to find out about what being a commercial lawyer and the legal profession is truly like. This means we don’t shy away from talking about the good stuff and the bad stuff.

TCLA is also a place where you can be vulnerable. We want our members to know they are not alone if they are struggling with mental health issues, struggling with the training contract process, or having doubts about their own suitability for commercial law. Equally, we are here to celebrate the success of our members when they have done extremely well.

Ultimately, we know the process is competitive, but we also know that this is not a zero-sum game. We want all of our members to work towards becoming the best version of themselves, and we strive to upskill and support everyone, no matter who you are, or the stage of your journey.

4. Curiosity

At its core, the TCLA is about learning. Our community is bonded by a desire for personal and professional self-improvement.
The reason our motto is ‘helping aspiring lawyers become the best version of themselves’ is because we are not here just to help aspiring lawyers secure training contracts. We are here to help you become exceptionally talented people, with confidence in your abilities, so you can succeed in whatever you want to do. We want you to leave feeling inspired.

5. Original thinking

We will always strive to give you the best resources we can, but this never trumps original thinking. We want all our members to think for themselves, to know that there are different ways to achieve a goal, to realise that just because things were always done a certain way, it doesn’t mean that’s the right way.

Law Firm Application Questions

Hi everyone!

I thought to start this thread to share the application questions of different firms for preparation of the 2021-2022 application cycle.

**REMINDER: these will be last years' application questions (2020-2021) so may be different from this year (2021-2022)**

I'll start with CMS:

CMS

Focusing on one or more of CMS’s sectors, what challenges and opportunities for growth do you see presenting themselves over the coming 12-24 months? (200 words)

What does exceptional client service look like from a future facing lawyer? (200 words)

How would you describe the relationship between law and business? (200 words)

@Jaysen any chance this thread gets pinned
