I flukely managed to convert my Summer VS at a SC firm. Thanks everyone that has given me advice and insight on this forum. I find that it's really based on whether you get along with your supervisor/trainee and their personalities, so don't be too discouraged if you aren't able to convert this cycle. A lot is actually out of your control, but the one thing you can control is how many applications you send out, so cast a very wide net.

For those that may be interested, I just wanted to flag that Bird & Bird’s first year scheme closes on the 3rd of July! Best of luck to those interested. When I was offered the role back then , I remember it was just an application form - so ensure to make your answers fully tailored to the firm, commercial law, and your long-term goals!

Hi all, hope everyone is doing well! Just wondering if anyone would be able to advise on my situation:

I completed a vac scheme in spring and received a TC offer but as i had another vac scheme in summer (which i am currently doing), I asked the firm to extend my offer deadline from may to 4th july (this friday). In hindsight, this wasn't the best thought out situation as the 4th July is the last day of my vac scheme but I didn't think i would like my current vac scheme so much.

I have asked the summer firm if they could accelerate the decision making process for TC offers but, understandly, they have to wait for the scheme to finish and said they would get back to me by mid-July latest.

My question is: should I ask the spring firm to extend their deadline again or should I just accept it then renege if the summer firm gives me an offer?

Whilst I am like 75% sure that the summer firm will give me an offer, it is still risky to decline the spring firm and any TC is better in the end.

If anyone can provide any advice, I would be extremely grateful! Thank you

I'd take the spring offer, at least you have the assurance of an offer. It's too risky to wait.

Thank you! That’s what I suspected too. Would anyone know what the best way to write the acceptance email then? Struggling with how to phrase it knowing I might have to decline it a short while later 😥

    Hi guys,

I am unsure if anyone else has been in the same situation but I thought its worth an ask.
How does one go about explaining that you achieved a first in your undergrad despite the percentage being 69.9 when your actual percentage should be 70.6 but the university scaled down your marks for a module?
(ik its not the best but i did everything I could for this grade while struggling with personal stuff and it feels absolutely shitty tbh given everything but it is what it is)
Also, should I send an update to the firms I have an active application with to let them know my final grades and the change because of the scaled down grade?

    Any advice would be helpful!

Is a 69.9 not still technically a first? I don't really understand why you would feel bad or even say it's not the best when it's clearly an impressive result and a solid degree? Apologies, but I'm not sure I'm clear what the problem is?

Yes update your results on any live applications (usually that's inputting the specific numbers for each modules).

But most importantly, well done on the degree result. Stop any of the negative chat about your achievements and best of luck with applications moving forwards

    Hi,

Thank you for your reply. I appreciate the encouragement. I understand the confusion regarding classification but because of my past performance record and the 0.1% difference, the classification has been rounded up to what it would have been without the scaling.

Would you recommend emailing grad rec with updates for applications I have already submitted?

    Thank you again!

If it's an online apply4law type application then there should be an option to update details like academic results. I don't think you need to email grad rec as I'm sure a lot of people will be in the same boat as you with results being released this time of year

Hi @Amma Usman @Ram Sabaratnam I am due to start a VS next week. I just recieved notice of who my supervisor and trainee buddy is. I want to message them on linkedin but I am unsure of what to say without coming across as trying too hard. Please could you help me?

You don’t need to message them on LinkedIn as you’ll meet them soon enough, and in person, anyway. I understand that you may want to get the ground running early but you will get more time during the scheme to build rapport.
