    General Discussion Thread 2020-21

I'm sorry to hear this. How many firms have you applied to in total? And has anyone reviewed your applications?

Query about: Big Tech Regulation - US Government Sues Google

It's a fair point to make and one that has protected the big tech giants for some time now. US antitrust law has been shaped by a school of thought, which, put very simplistically, is that monopolies are okay as long as they don't abuse their powers. And when thinking about abusing their powers...

Sounds like you've really thought this through and you've found a firm that's right for you. Well done :)

    Common mistakes on application forms.....

A few more words I'd generally advise against in applications: 'lateral thinking' 'symbiosis' 'stimulated' 'dynamic' I find candidates sometimes use these words because they're shortcuts to explaining what you mean/why you like something. I'd also avoid using too many complex words in a...

Having trouble linking experiences to firm's practice areas.

You're doing exactly the right things. It is often very hard to articulate why something is interesting. That's why many candidates don't do this, or they repeat a point they've read elsewhere. If you want to write a particularly convincing answer, I'd encourage you to take the time to explore...

    Your thoughts required (again!)

Still working on it! It's quite a long process to implement changes to the forums (a few more months), but it's next in line after some changes coming today.

    General Discussion Thread 2020-21

Hey everyone, please note that you may have some trouble accessing the main TCLA website (www.thecorporatelawacademy.com) over the next couple of hours. This should not affect the forum or TCLA Premium. My apologies for any inconvenience caused by this. Edit: This is now taking place Tuesday...

    Common mistakes on application forms.....

Name dropping i.e. simply mentioning names in an application form is bad. If you are using mentioning names in an application with a purpose i.e. you are discussing how what you learned from X led you to apply to a firm - that's fine.

    Common mistakes on application forms.....

I'd avoid generally phrases like 'my task was X' or 'I was responsible for Y'. Instead, we can jump straight into discussing what you actually did. For example, rather than stating, 'I was responsible for negotiating contracts, liaising with suppliers, and raising sponsorship'. You can say, 'I...

    General Discussion Thread 2020-21

You started this by being annoyed by Jess because she hadn’t responded to someone’s query over a Friday night. That’s just petty and unreasonable. Whatever issues you’ve had in the past, I feel you’re coming into this forum with a big chip on your shoulder. It’s absolutely fine to be upset and...

why do you actually want to work in commercial law? (honest)

Love the honesty in this thread. Initially, I'd say I was drawn in by the prestige and salary. I wanted to be 'successful' and I felt becoming a commercial lawyer would make me successful. Outside of that, I'd say the actual work interested me the most. I really liked the idea of drafting and...
