I'd keep it fairly short/succinct - probably doesn't need much more than 100-200 words per seat preference. Obviously, if one is slightly longer, that is fine but I wouldn't make any of them exceptionally long descriptions/explanations.
If the firm has said not to shorten it, then I wouldn't at all.
Decisions on applications often come down to fine margins, and this is one that you can control.

Then it is up to you really - I don't think there will be any issues with which one you choose. The vacation scheme will obviously help you work out if the firm is right for you too though.
It can be over any period of time. I think they are just looking for one example rather than people trying to showcase how they demonstrated resilience throughout their life.
As long as it comes under one example, I think it could be over any time period.
