Wow, I'm gutted to hear this. I'm not surprised you feel demoralised.
I hope that you keep on going and that you leverage this vacation scheme to secure the training contract you want. In the future, you might look back on today and be proud of how you managed to keep on going, despite the huge...
I know it's tough, but I do think it's good to step away from this thread from time to time and not feel the need to 'catch up'. It has a lot of fantastic content but constantly seeing which firms are responding to which people can be quite anxiety-inducing.
Great to have you on here Sarah, and I'm really sorry to hear about the situation with Skadden.
We'll do our very best to support you this year. If you have any questions along the way, please feel free to continue to post in this thread :).
Yes, I'd highly recommend Arun's From TCLA to TC course, particularly his section on mindset and procedural/substantive commercial awareness. I'd then check out the assessment centre section of our Becoming an Exceptional Candidate course.
I'd then suggest the following threads...
I'm a little unclear on whether the person was actually fired or made redundant? Either way, you wouldn't really be expected to know much about employment legislation, so to me the question looks to be assessing your commercial thinking.
I guess there's two main ways to see this, one would be...
Great to have both of you guys on here.
@Asil - do feel free to post if there's anything we can help you with.
@Chanelle - wow, it sounds like you have a very interesting background to draw from. I have my fingers crossed for you this year!
I'd just flag off the bat that 'high ranking and innovative departments' and 'pro bono work' come across as vague. I'd only mention pro bono if there was something very specific about what the firm was doing that mattered to you (and you could back this up). Otherwise, all top City firms offer...
I'd focus the core of your answer on showing how you developed your skills by discussing your experiences. Personally, I would then explicitly (but concisely) reference how the skills are relevant to the role of a commercial solicitor. I think this is an opportunity to demonstrate your...
I'd consider this question to be referring to university/school and achievements within your studies, rather than society achievements. This is especially the case as there is another question on the form for activities outside your academic career.
Yep your latter point is exactly right. This question is just looking for you to demonstrate that you understand what makes Osborne Clarke stand out compared to other firms (and therefore alluding to why you are applying to Osborne Clarke). I think the reasons you have mentioned sound specific...
I think it's very unlikely a firm will ask this question unless it's something you state yourself. I know many UK firms want to break further into the US market, but I'm not sure I know that many want a US merger.
You are right, it is a huge feat for law firms of this size - if you're doing a proper merger, you've got to bring partners on board, prove that there's a compelling case to merge, find a firm with similar profitability levels and attitudes, think about client conflicts etc.
