It would take them a lot longer to get back to people if they did it that way round. The SJT and WG helps them cut down the number of applications they need to manually review.
Rejection emails for mass recruitment campaigns aren’t personalised. It was likely a standard email that went out to everyone. They don’t have the time to respond to every applicant individually.
Recruitment, especially mass recruitment campaigns, almost always take longer than expected. I’ve recruited for 3 roles at the same time before and it was expected the campaign would be completed in 6 weeks. It took 12. Sometimes delays happen due to no fault of their own.
This does make sense. I’m a career changer with a very average grades. I work for one of the major banks and make very good money already, so if I didn’t land a TC I would be more than okay. I also work a demanding job, so I don’t have much time to dedicate to applications and attending events.
Personally, and this is just a very unwashed opinion, I’d keep it out of VS/TC applications and save it for a point in your career where it clearly complements, rather than competes with, your commitment to the firm.

I would also think it's a gigantic red flag if a firm's GR team were working at full capacity over Christmas, too. It likely means the firm doesn't care about W/L balance and/or doesn't respect holidays.
