This has been the case for me. I worked throughout Christmas and NY (except for the bank holidays), but all my colleagues were on leave and are spending the day catching up on emails and just getting back into work-mode.
I get that it’s a nerve wracking time, but pointlessly emailing grad recruitment will only mean that it takes longer for you to hear back. They have a finite amount of time. If they spend that time responding to emails that don’t need to be sent, that’s less time they can spend on reviewing...
They’re not going to pass over a good candidate just because they applied later. If you don’t do it, you’re only making grad recruitment’s job easier because that’s one less application they have to review.

I submit an application and move on. Stay busy. Focus on other applications/activities. I don’t get too invested in any firm upfront, because it’s so competitive. It also means if I do progress it’s a nice surprise.
