just saw their email, and they did say 'no later than 11 November'; we're now an hour from the end of the day so I'm almost certain it's gonna be an email acceptance/rejection.

For another firm (not Ashurst), I did get a VS offer via phone call at around 7pm last year, so I’d assume end of the day does not necessarily mean 5pm

I’d agree with this. As a recruiter, I was often emailing late at night, even on Fridays 😣
