Question for anyone who's done vac schemes before - how do you actually go about the above? Are you just encouraged to approach people at random or is there more guidance during the vac scheme itself?
Arguably my biggest concern about doing well on my vac schemes is the networking side of things - definitely doesn't come naturally 😅.
As an introvert, networking was my worst fear but there are several things I find make it a little easier:
1. Speak about your interests to your supervisor or trainee buddy: You could ask: "I'm also interested in x practice area, do you know anyone within that practice area that would be open to speaking with me?" (I did this and was introduced to associates/trainees who were happy to spend 15-30mins during the scheme).
2. During vac scheme events where associates/trainees attend, start a convo and ask if they would be interested in talking further and arrange a chat whenever they're available.
3. See if there are other events during the scheme at the firm (like firm-group events/multicultural events) and attend if you have time. I attended some during a vac scheme and used that to network more.
4. Use the firm database/Linkedin to network with the leads of network/affinity groups, and ask to arrange to talk with them about their mission/updates etc. If you show a genuine interest, I'm sure they would be happy to arrange a coffee chat.
[Don't forget to keep a diary of the people you connect with and what you discussed so you can discuss it during the TC interview if asked).
Edit- as others have mentioned, there is honestly no pressure - these tips are just if you have a genuine interest in something and feel a coffee chat would benefit you.
