Whether it counts against you or not depends on how you answer the question I guess? If you say that the experience taught you about law in general, however you realised public law wasn't the best option to your skillset / interests etc then it can count for you?

Also it depends on motivations for participating in the experience, and whether those motivations overlap with commercial law.

I mean I guess it can depend on the firm too, and the length of experience.
i essentially said i found the public law experience too evidentiary, fitting people into predefined boxes rather than shaping the situation myself (asylum law) and that my research internship was similar in the sense that i didn't get to do anything, i was simply reciting knowledge and not applying it. that nonetheless i think it's important to give back and spoke about one of their probono initiatives haha

edit: another reason i dont want to go into public law is bcs i found many of the scenarios emotionally draining but i felt it would be risky to say that
