Application Q

I always see a question on applications asking about my hobbies, interests, positions of responsibility, etc... and never know how to approach it properly. What do law firms want me to talk about and in what way - do I just describe my experiences/interests (i.e. describe my responsibilities as a society secretary/peer mentor or that I've competitively trampolined for a long time)? Or is it some other 'form'?

My very difficult situation

Hello everyone,
I am in dire need of guidance. I used to think my module marks were high because I go to university in Scotland, and I converted my letter grades to percentages. However, I have to put my letter grades as they are on applications. I am pursuing a 4 year law degree, and I am reaching the end of my second year. My A levels were BBC due to mitigating circumstances, and my first year marks were a high 2.2. In second year I secured a low 2.1. However, most of my modules are below a 2.1. In my second year, I have made a fundamental mistake in all of my essays, which lowered my marks significantly, and it is very frustrating. I do not know whether my low 2.1 in second year will enable me to apply for vacation schemes. I do not know how to spend my summers productively. The next two years I have to nail a first class degree, and get consistent good marks.I really am confused on what steps to take and would throughly appreciate guidance. I already know what to do when it comes to academics, because it goes without saying I need better grades. However, how do I enhance my skills over the summers, because I can’t apply for vacation schemes due to my academics, and there are only immigration law firms in my area. I am keen on a career in commercial law, but I am no longer focused on city law, because that is near impossible for me.

help with this please

Which of the following below regarding the legal and evidential burdens is the most correct?

  • 1-If there is an evidential burden on the defence due to a specific defence being raised (such as alibi) then the prosecution will have to prove beyond a reasonable doubt that both the alibi is untrue, and that the defendant committed the offence charged.
  • 2-Where the legal burden is the prosecution’s alone the evidential burden is also solely on the prosecution.
  • 3-Where the legal burden is on the prosecution there is also an evidential burden on the prosecution, however, there might be an evidential burden on the defendant if a specific defence (such as alibi) is raised and then the defendant needs to prove the defence.
  • 4-If there is an evidential burden on the defence due to a specific defence being raised (such as alibi) then the prosecution will have to prove on the balance of probabilities that the alibi is untrue, and beyond a reasonable doubt that that the defendant committed the offence charged.

Internal Candidate Application Question

Hi,
I am applying for a firm internally and I have to answer the question below.

Explain your role and your key achievements to date.
Consider what are your strengths, what are your development area/goals, what are your ambitions?

How should I approach this question?

Do I discuss work based achievements or general? Do I talk about the development within my role?
Ambition - its to become a solicitor but how do I expand that?

"legal influencers" on linkedin

What are people's view on these self-proclaimed "legal influencers" on linkedin that constantly pop up and clog the feed? I am a bit confused as to why there are so many of them in the legal profession in comparison to other fields like investment banking and consulting?

They have now even invaded instagram and tiktok and just seem very humble-braggy to me!

I know getting a TC is a big deal and extremely difficult to do, but how does that make someone qualified to be giving out advice to TC seekers? Just confused and would appreciate people's views on the matter :)

PGDL at BPP is awful

Why are there not more people on this forum talking about how awful the PGDL at BPP was this year? Surely it would be useful for people considering between BPP and ULaw if we were more honest and open about our experiences?

If you are self-funding and have the choice, stay away from them like the plague. It wasn't just the online teaching element that was awful, you can tell the course was designed last minute with the amount of errors and lack of knowledge of the teaching staff about anything.

I could truly write an essay with all the issues I have had with them, maybe I will if there is demand from people wanting to know the real tea!

Training Contract- my journey

Hi, my names Zoreen.

I have just started applying for training contracts, I got all the way to interview with my last one however experienced rejection due to my lack of commercial awareness. This is something I want to improve on massively so have become a Gold member and would be grateful for any guidance that is provided.

I am currently a Paralegal in Litigation but am looking to broaden my horizons so applying to firm where I can see myself fitting in around the Leeds/ Manchester area, I am not sure what area I want to qualify in so am currently keeping an open mind and applying to firms that are appealing to me.

Hoping with TCLA support I secure a training contract soon!

Thanks

Zoreen
