SHL SJT - Graduate vs Management?

Hi

Does anyone know which type of SJT is given by law firms? I have purchased Jobtestprep subscription and it is giving me a pack of blended SJT tests from a company called SHL which has 8 management and 6 graduate SJTs. It also says one doesn't know in advance which type will be given , so I am assuming its best to prepare both. Any advice ?
Thanks

IELTS deadline for visa application (law school)

Sorry, I know I shouldn't ask this on this forum but am getting desperate as my questions are getting ignored elsewhere.

Basically I have an ongoing application with a RG but was told they couldn't continue with my application as I didn't have IELTS. I arranged to take the IELTS on the computer but the earliest test date is 29th Aug. The results will also take 3-5 days to release.

I've read elsewhere that the deadline for IELTS to be submitted/ CAS to be issued is on 31st August. Is this true? Do university admissions take concessions and wait for my results to be out?

Thank you and I apologise again for posting this question here. I've asked the admissions but they wouldn't be in the office on Monday (bank holiday). The suspense is killing me.

LCC (Diploma) vs LCC (Masters) vs LCC (SQE Masters)??

Hi,

So I have a TC with a consortium firm and therefore I will be doing the CCP at BPP.
I'm about to start the law conversion course at BPP in September, but I don't understand the difference between LCC (Diploma), LCC (Masters) and LCC (SQE Masters). In fact, I don't even understand which one I'm enrolled in as a Consortium student. Can anyone help?

Also, does anyone know if one gets a Masters for doing the CCP?

Thank in advance!!

Defeated before I have even started?

Hi all, new member to TCLA, about to be a first year llb student with a strong interest in becoming a solicitor in the not so distant future.

Feeling a little bit defeated despite not starting my law journey due to not achieving the best of results academically. My GCSE's were all in the range of 6s-5's and BBC at A-level, of course I was aware of the competitive nature before deciding law was for me however it's impossible for me to say that I feel out of place without even studying a module or applying for a vac scheme or training contract, especially with no mitigating circumstance to rely upon.

Of course I won't jsut give up however is it even realistic to have any real high ambitions atm as I will be attending a non-russell group (University of Salford) although I am really happy to have gotten into my firm university is there any real chance I will be able to work for a high end law firm (city level) after my undergrad if I turn my academia around and possibly achieve a 1st class, I hope there is, and honestly believe there could be, any thoughts or advice would be appreciated. Many thanks.

Assessment Centre

Hi I have an AC coming up and I would like to ask if anyone knows where to practice a written exercise. The closest I have on mind is Forage virtual internships. It would be great if you could share what the exercise is about eg. finding errors, summarising, cross-referencing? I saw that some members have done a presentation, is it like a case study/advising clients?

Will My A-Level Grades Affect My Applications?

Hi, apologies if this is in the wrong section, but would like to seek some advice.

For background:
  1. International
  2. Decent O-Levels (1A+, 5A, 3B+)
  3. Horrible A-Levels (CCD)
    1. Sat for my A-Levels lost and unmotivated, coupled with having to provide full-time care to a family member for approx. 1 year.
    2. Started my LLB in a low-ranked uni in my home country, before transferring to an RG uni. Graduated with a 2:1 this past summer.
    3. Really struggled in Year 1, but managed to slowly claw my way back up from a 56 in y1, to a 63 in y2, and 68 in y3.
I've managed to use my results in year 3 to get a 3-month placement within the government legal department of my home country. That said, I remain super insecure about my A-Level and Year 1 grades, and realistically what are the chances of those affecting my applications for vacation schemes/paralegal positions in the UK, as I understand it's a super competitive scene.

Thank you in advance!

8 tips to make your applications stand out!

Hi everyone, Erin here! 😊

How is your week going so far?

I know that many of you have already begun drafting your first applications for the 2023/24 cycle. This is your first shot at showing the firm why they should pick you to progress to the next stage. I know this can be a daunting thought, however it's also exciting - it's your chance to shine! ⭐

I wanted to jump into the forum today to share some advice on how to make your applications stand out - I hope you find these useful. Feel free to share any of your own tips in this thread, we'd all love to hear them! 🤩

Without further ado, here are 8 tips to make your application stand out:
  1. Cut out all generic phrases or sentences. Make sure every sentence is there for a reason. Ask yourself, does this sentence add value to my application? If it doesn't, remove it.

  2. Keep your language simple. Don’t use a big word where a simple word will do. Unnecessary jargon and complicated language only shows you can’t communicate your points clearly.

  3. Avoid unnecessary capitalisation. Only the firm's name, job titles/companies, and the beginning of new sentences need to be capitalised. If you're unsure, check! It's always best to check before submitting - attention to detail is a key skill of being a lawyer after all!

  4. Choose commercial topics that genuinely interest you. The recruiter will be able to tell if you have just chosen the topic because it's easy to write about. Choose one that you're genuinely interested in, and your enthusiasm will shine through in your writing.

  5. Cut out flattery. When answering "Why this firm", don’t just tell a firm they’re great, explain why they’re great, and why this matters to you personally.

  6. Try to use some evidence to back up your reasons for wanting to become a commercial lawyer. Avoid the "I've wanted to be a lawyer ever since I was born" cliche, and focus on your actual reasons behind wanting to enter the profession. Your personal story is what makes you stand out.

  7. If you abbreviate, be consistent with your references. It’s usually fine to abbreviate a firm's name, but ensure that you keep the same abbreviation throughout. For example, if you're going to abbreviate 'Herbert Smith Freehills' to 'HSF' make sure to stick to the 'HSF' format throughout to maintain consistency.

  8. Don’t assume a recruiter will know how impressive your experiences are. It’s your job to sell your experiences by being very specific about what you did and what you achieved. Include the names of these activities (and dates if you can), and highlight your key learnings from each one.

Work experience section for Vacation Scheme application

Hi,

I was wondering how applicants best approach the work experience section on applications. I have come across the OWL format from Idin Sabpour. This includes Overview, Work done, and Lessons learnt (extra bonus for linking back to the firm). However, graduate recruitment teams mention being able to reflect on the skills gained from your work experiences.

Do you tend to focus on a particular set of skills (approx. 2-3) gained in each work experience, or do you aim to cover everything you learned for each experience?

I would be very interested to know how you approach this. I previously applied for the Macfarlanes Vacation Scheme and believe that I was successful because I had a concise and informative work experience section (linking back to the firm) compared to other applications.

Thank you

Applying without 2nd year marks?

Due to strikes I've received 3/6 of my modules back. My average from those is 63%, compared to 69% in first year. The modules I received back were the ones I knew i'd do the worst in so im not ultimately too concerned. However, my university predicts October is when I will recieve the rest of my marks.

Is it okay/recommended to apply for vacation schemes without receiving all of my marks back yet? Are firms accommodating to the current situation regarding delayed results?

Weekly Discussion on Wednesday?

Hi Jake, may I ask you when is the commercial awareness discussion? I may be wrong. I was under the impression that it is a weekly routine every Wednesday where we have a webinar or an in-depth discussion about a topic. The thread that I found really helpful was the one that discussed the impact of BOE raising interest rates. So I'm really hoping to get more threads as such!
