TCLA Vacation Scheme Applications Discussion Thread 2023-24

It's been over two months since I completed the blended assessment for Stephenson Harwood (Spring VS) - has anyone else heard back/should I contact to check for an update?

I am also confused as I have seen people post about a VI element that was not part of the assessment that I did...

Sorry, I've not done it yet, but just received an email from SH saying I need to do the test and this was their explanation of it. This is for their vacation scheme if that makes a difference.
Interesting! I checked their application process and it splits the assessment and VI into different stages, so that's slightly confusing. Also applied for the VS (spring).

Hi everyone, I am in desperate need of advice.

After many rejections and struggling to secure a TC, I have started questioning whether my work experience is enough. I have completed a 2 months part time internship with a start-up, a 3 months graduate internship in operations, a vac scheme at a MC firm (which I did not convert to TC), an insight week at a MC firm, and around 8-9 open days. + I have a couple of decent extra curriculars too but that was during my year abroad. I am currently doing the PGDL, having graduated last summer. I am really struggling to get to interviews, I feel like I don't have enough experience to stand out.

What kind of work experience should I aim for in my CV? I was planning to apply for a grad scheme (like business development or something with the Competition and Markets Authority) after my PGDL, and while on the grad scheme I'd keep applying to training contracts. I am also aware of the paralegal route; however, opportunities for paralegals outside London are limited. Or should I just aim for a legal assistant role after my PGDL and keep applying to vac schemes and TCs?

I genuinely can't afford to be unemployed after the end of my PGDL and I really don't know which job would put me in the best position when applying for TCs or vac schemes. What kind of role/work experience/job would provide me with something to standout?

I know people with way less work experience than me securing TCs and I genuinely don't get what law firms look for. My application writing skills are decent too. @Jessica Booker please feel free to give your view on this

Thanks everyone, really loosing hope with each rejection

Has anyone not heard anything from Farrer & Co post-app? I understand that they sent out both PFOs and AC invitations this morning but I have not heard anything yet.
They're probably doing it in batches (I hope). The person on here who's got an AC invite applied in November so maybe they're going through apps chronologically

I'm probably not qualified at all to give advice given this is my first application cycle. Regardless, the fact the you got a vac scheme with a MC firm is a good indication that you definitely do have the skills, so don't give up. The rest of your experience looks quite good. The only thing that might be considered missing is client facing jobs which really help with showing communication and interpersonal skills (e.g., working in a pub or retail store). My current work experiences are very simple (waiter, salesman, and a 1 week internship at an in-house legal team), and I have experienced a decent bit of success on applications. I don't think firms require or even expect you to have 'specialist' work experiences. There is undoubtedly a lot of luck involved in getting passed the application stage, and again your past success with a MC firm is a great sign so just make sure your applications are closely tailored to each firm and keep going.

for those who haven't done the bristows VI yet, i'd suggest keeping a 1 min timer on your desk as you answer to help you keep track of time. the timer on their portal is very confusing and does not help you at all. it was also very difficult to find as it works as a border around your face as opposed to numbers. this really caught me off guard while answering so you should definitely keep your own time piece with you.
