TCLA Direct Training Contract Applications Discussion Thread 2025-26

Has anyone heard anything positive from either:
1. Mayer Brown (post VI+SJT)
2. Macfarlanes (post Simulate test - the second SJT with VI mixed in)
3. Bakers (post VI, since last weeks AC?)
4. Reed Smith (post written app - based on recent comments it seems not)

Mostly interested if any AC invites have gone out for MB, Macs or RS, or if anyone knows if Bakers is a guaranteed PFO atp?
Nothing back from MacFarlanes to anyone I think. I think they do it in July usually.

Hi @Abbie Whitlock !

I hope you’re well.

I was wondering if you had any tips regarding an open day application - is there any structure I should follow when answering why I’m interested in attending?
Hi!

I am doing well, thank you - hope you are too! :)

For an open day application, I would generally try to structure the answer around three points:
  1. Why you are interested in commercial law: for example, what specifically has sparked that interest, and how have you developed this?
  2. Why you are interested in this particular firm: be as specific as possible here and refer to the firm's practice areas, sector strengths, culture, recent work, or anything else that stands out to you. It also helps to link it back to your own experiences and passions if you can, as that can emphasise why you are interested in it.
  3. Why the open day would be valuable to you: for example, gaining a better understanding of the firm's work, speaking with trainees and lawyers, and confirming that the firm's culture and practice align with your interests.
The third point is often the most important and, in my view, is what distinguishes an open day application from a vacation scheme or training contract application. Rather than focusing on providing that you are already committed to the firm (though you should still show genuine interest), explain what you hope to learn from the experience and why attending the open day would help you make a more informed decision about your future applications.

I would focus less on proving you are the perfect candidate and more on demonstrating genuine curiosity about the firm and making the most of the opportunity. The strongest answers tend to be the ones that can clearly explain why they want to attend this specific open day, rather than any open day at all.

Best of luck with your application! :)

I feel like emailing comes after you dont hear anything for ages. Im just asking around if there’s been any movement re AC invites after the batch of VIs due last week.
I get you and think it might be early days so they are looking at VI's this week and will likely get back to people in the next 2-3 weeks. I saw 1 person got rejected from VI last week so it might be good news for you. Also think they might wait until the Vacation Scheme is finished then send AC invites. I hope you get the AC.

Has anyone navigated reasonable adjustments in during the vacation scheme please? Positive/ helpful experiences appreciated. Not sure how to navigate
This is my personal experience only and I might be reading more into it than I should however on the basis that it might be helpful I'm posting it. My success rate has gone up very significantly since I stopped disclosing my ADHD and staying that I get academic extra time.. I tend to use the same base answers to many questions for different firms (obviously I tailor them) but IMO in such a highly pressurised, time critical environment, what HR teams say in terms of their approach to adjustments might not match up with what is actually required on the ground. Just putting it out there..
