Looking for past cover letters or online forms

Very much depends on the firm. Slaughters is a bit of an anomaly when it comes to cover letters. They specify a short cover letter, but many applicants I know adopt the traditional cover letter style. After some digging, I found @Sandrou's advice on the Slaughter and May cover letter...

Hi all, As I've done the for my past cover letters, I thought I'd show you how I would review this application now.

    Business simulation group exercise

Hey Alistair, I'm not sure if @DeletedMember21 is still around, but she asked about a business simulation group exercise some time ago. You can find my advice on these exercises here: https://thecorporatelawacademy.com/forum/threads/help-with-tc-assessments.45/#post-273. Based on the questions...

Looking for past cover letters or online forms

Hi Ben You would normally be correct. The cover letter should be used for information you haven't already provided in your application form. So if the question in the application form was: "Why are you applying to this firm?", you would be justified leaving this out in your cover letter...

    why you?

A "why you?" isn't particularly common at interview. I was asked it in one of my interviews, however, it was towards the end and more of a spontaneous question. I would think about your biggest strengths. Choose three to four and back up each with examples. These could be from studying, work...

    Networking events

I used to struggle to work out what to ask recruiters too. It's far easier speaking to lawyers when you can ask them about their background and experiences. I used these examples in relation to Slaughter and May, but you can also apply them here: Mainly, just try to have a genuine...

    US vs UK Legal Market

It depends on the practice area we are talking about, but some of the elite US firms are already a huge threat to UK firms. Especially in the high-end M&A/PE/finance space. It is true that many of the US firms focus on a small number of core practice areas. But they have especially made strides...

    US vs UK Legal Market

Some thoughts: It was/is arguably easier to crack the London market than crack the US (NY) market. When US law firms first came to London, it was because their clients were expanding internationally. They used these existing relationships – with US corporations and Wall Street banks – to anchor...

Want to request a law firm insight?

I haven't written a Jones Day insight yet, but one interesting thing to note: The firm has topped the Bloomberg M&A and Thomson Reuters league tables for the number of worldwide deals every quarter since the end of 2000.
