Hi All,
It's awesome to receive messages from you guys to say you've secured a training contract. I quite often hear that future trainees to help us out at TCLA (which we really appreciate!) but aren't entirely sure how. I've put this list together to give you some guidance on what helps us out...
Just came across Linklaters' plans to scrap its application: https://www.legalcheek.com/2019/09/linklaters-ditches-traditional-training-contract-application-to-save-students-time/
@Jessica Booker - do you reckon this is a one-off or think we'll see more firms doing something like this in the...

Hi all,
It’s been great to read about everyone’s success stories- what a nice way to keep candidates motivated!
I agree with a lot of what everyone has said here that there definitely is an element of luck. While it’s easy to feel disheartened, you do need to remember...
Week 2 (Real Estate):
Day 1
Introduction to the Real Estate team
Note: Real Estate sits in More London office!
Initial impressions: much smaller than Corporate IBR
Less busy in terms of work, but more time to talk to people and listen to their experiences
Eg. Learned about how real estate is...
An incredible soul shared her diary for the PwC vacation scheme. This is a great opportunity to better understand the structure of a scheme, the types of work you might be doing and how to keep a log of your performance. It's also a glowing recommendation of the PwC scheme!

Hi All,
I'm pleased to say one of our long-time forum members, @Abstruser, has kindly agreed to answer any questions you have on this thread.
She is a future trainee at a Magic Circle law firm, and a first-class law graduate. She secured multiple training contract offers in her second cycle...
Agreed. If you want to talk about the impact of AI on the legal sector, that’s fine. Just try to narrow down what you’re talking about so you’re not left with an undeveloped/vague answer. 5G and legal tech sound like different points (AI comes under legal tech but so does many other things). If...
That's hard to say without seeing the answer. As long as you're using the space to make sure you're focusing on the specific things you did on your internship, you'll be fine. If you feel confident that you've said everything you need to say - and the rest would be just fluff - you can stop there.
I’d be interested to hear the context in which they said that. If you come across a deal as you’re researching the firm and it helps to back up your point then fine - but I wouldn’t go looking for a deal just for the sake of it. There are so many ways to differentiate a firm that finding a deal...
Who told you to centre your application around a deal? I rarely see applications that are better off because of the mention of a deal. Most of the time, I find it comes across as quite artificial and doesn't give me any more insight into why a candidate is applying to a particular firm.
Good idea! Let us know if TCLA can do anything to help you guys.
Here is last year's thread: https://www.thecorporatelawacademy.com/forum/threads/aspiring-solicitors-commercial-awareness-competition.723/. If I recall, the group ended up setting up a Skype group to chat over commercial issues.
Don't worry about this for an AC, but just for reference - a law firm's template memo might begin something like this:
(Copied from here: https://info.legalsolutions.thomsonreuters.com/pdf/perspec/1999-fall/1999-fall-11.pdf).
If it's a report/a summary of some legal research, you might want...
I agree it's tough to work out how law firms are different.
I used to start by researching the website for the firm I wanted to speak to. If I came across areas I wanted to know more about then I'd use that as the basis for a question. When speaking to trainees, I'd ask more personal questions...
I'm afraid my knowledge of cryptocurrencies is very limited. You might find this series of posts from NRF useful: https://www.nortonrosefulbright.com/en/knowledge/resources-and-tools/fintech-law-and-regulation/deciphering-cryptocurrencies.
Great, I'll create this soon.
What kind of events are we looking for? I assume Legal Cheek/Firm events and open days - any others I'm missing? Would you want to see specific events from organisations like AS?
Before we get to law firms, some factors to consider first:
Which market are we talking about? What are the causes of this recession? What sectors are these impacting? In what circumstances will a recession impact law firms? What law firms are we talking about?
It's pretty hard to generalise...
