TCLA Direct Training Contract Applications Discussion Thread 2025-26

@Abbie Whitlock

Hey Abbie, and anyone else who wants to pitch in!

I have a bit of an odd situation, I've gotten a vac scheme for a firm but I actually know one of the trainees personally, me and her have worked together in the past (quite a long time for two years).
We don't keep in touch, but I would rather someone independent be my trainee buddy/supervisor just for fairness. I don't know if I should mention this to graduate recuritment.
I don't know if it'll be seen as dishonest if I wasn't upfront about it but I thought equally if I did mention it, it may come across a bit weird/like I was trying to avoid her and maybe seem like I can't work with people well or something.

Really don't know how to proceed and any advice is welcome!

One way to circumvent this could be that when they ask you which practice areas you would like to sit in, choose ones which she is not currently sat within as typically your trainee buddy will be someone from the practice area that they allocate you.

Hey!

I'd say that there is no issue of dishonesty here, and I don't think it'll come across like you are trying to avoid her! If you are concerned, I think the best approach might be to simply flag it to the graduate recruitment team. You don't need to make it a big issue, but letting them know that you have previously worked with one of the trainees could help to keep the process transparent and avoids any potential awkwardness later on.

You could frame it quite neutrally - for example, that you happen to know them from a previous role and wanted to mention it in case they'd prefer to keep things independent. That way, you aren't suggesting there is a problem, just giving them the option to make the appropriate call.

It shouldn't come across as strange or difficult at all - I'm sure they've encountered similar situations in the past :)

Hi @Abbie Whitlock, I'm in a bind as to how I should list a particular A-level grade. In my country, only 5 subjects are taken into account for percentage calculation, but we can take additional subjects if we want to. I registered for an additional subject, but ended up not writing the final exam. However, it still shows up on my transcript as an 'F' grade in line with the exam policy. It has never been considered a valid grade in my country, which only considers the 5 subjects taken. I am unsure whether to detail it as a separate grade or just mention it in mitigating circumstances. Any advice is appreciated, thank you!

Ah, ok - I hate to be the bearer of bad news but I heard back pretty quickly from them after my SJT (having waited FIVE MONTHS after submitting my application). Fingers crossed they get back to you and that it’s good news - recruitment timings never make sense to me and they’re probably swamped 🤞🤞
Have you heard back from them after the proofreading exercise?

Congrats! Did you get a confirmation email afetr the proofreading?
Thank you! Buzzing. I didn't get email confirmation after the proofreading exercise actually, but if you click on the link taking you to the proofreading, it should show that you've completed all the activities they want.

On that note, has anyone here done the online interview for Withers? I'd love some guidance on it - it's with HR and a partner apparently, and up to 50 minutes... does that mean it's on my application as well as some problem solving?
