Grades on CV

Hi everyone,

I have a question on mentioning my grades on the CV. I learned that I should write my education section like Company Law(2.1). All my other modules are all 2.1 or 1st so they are fine using this format. But I have one module in 2.2 and I am worried that if I write it in this format it would make me look bad. Should I just state the name of the module and do not write the grades? Or should I ditch this format altogether?

Thanks!

Opinions on 'Assistant Paralegal' Roles

I recently attended a law fair at my University and representatives from a national law firm explained that they were introducing a new "innovative" role - 'Assistant Paralegal'.

It had been explained to me that this role will be introduced exclusively to graduate students and will NOT be offered as a part-time role to allow students to obtain legal expertise alongside studying.

I believe that entry to the profession is already being lengthened in terms of expected experience and academic qualifications. I asked the law-firm's representative whether she believed that this role would act to delay entry to the legal profession - to which she replied "yes, but I think that is a good thing", perhaps not correctly understanding my question.

In your opinion, how do you feel about the potential that more law firms move towards introducing the role of 'Assistant Paralegal' as an exclusively graduate role?

Cover letter

Hi! I am writing a cover letter for a vacation scheme, and they ask to write "a covering letter detailing why you would like to complete a vacation placement". And I am not sure what to write. I wrote why I am applying to the firm, my skills and what I hope to gain form the scheme. But this part "a covering letter detailing why you would like to complete a vacation placement" I am not sure what to write about. Any opinions?

Dentons Paralegal

Hi!
I have been invited to 2 stage paralegal interviews with Dentons in the corporate team.
Does anyone have any experience? I am very unsure as to what they could focus on. The first interview was very thorough - lasted nearly an hour and asked me all sorts of motivational and competency-based questions.
Since it is with two partners, can it be on corporate law itself?

Looking for any advice:)

Are my first year grades good enough for Vac schemes?

My results first year were 73 Tort, 71 Public, 64 Understanding Law and 57 in Contract. Would my grades meet the threshold for most firms? Especially with the low contract score? I also have poorer A-level results than most (AAB) even though I'm studying at Nottingham where most have straight A's.

I also lack any legal work experience. I've only completed an Easter placement for a charity and took a role as a student researcher during first year. Next year I'll be in two committees for both Pro Bono and Mooting so hopefully, that would be a major improvement. I do work part time as a mail sorter but I don't think firms care much for that.

Despite applying a number of times for first year schemes I've failed to secure any. I would say this would mostly be due to poor applications, especially since I had no one review them before submitting.

Self-fund LPC/SQE or paralegal if looking to apply for LLM

Hi guys,

I am an international student who just graduated from a London RG university with a mid-2.1 in law. I was disappointed to know that I cannot attend the LLM programme this year as I failed to meet one of the conditions. I haven't bagged a TC in this cycle so I am thinking about other things to do for the next year. I think I will also reapply to the LLM programmes in the next academic year because a PG degree is pretty much a must if I want to work back home.

I am considering whether I should join LPC/SQE or work as a paralegal (or other law related jobs) for the coming year. I have read Jessica's reply on another post on how LPC is not a good option if one's TC starts in 2024/2025, which is likely the case for me. Does this mean self-funding SQE courses are more preferable?

As for potential paralegal roles, I see many job openings require one to complete LPC and to have prior experience in the relevant field. I have had two legal internships. One is in the IPO team in my home jurisdiction, while the other one I am currently on is in Litigation in London. I think in comparison getting a paralegal job will be better considering my hope to get a TC and apply for LLM. But I am not quite sure about the prospect of getting a paralegal job without much experience and LPC. Also, I would probably prioritise applying for VS for the next cycle, so I am not sure whether I could attend VS while on a paralegal job.

So my questions are:

1. Concerning my desire to apply for TC and LLM, which of the two is better? Can I still attend VS while on a paralegal job?

2. Is it feasible to get a paralegal job w/o TC, LPC, and legal work experience? If so, should I disregard the requirements on the job posts and just apply? Or are there any means to find such positions that have fewer requirements?

3. Is it ok if I apply to paralegal jobs while on the Graduate Route Visa?

Thanks!
