PGDL at BPP: Advice Appreciated!

Hi Everyone!

I am starting the PGDL at BPP in January, as it is required by my training contract provider. I was wondering whether anyone who has been in the consortium cohort could share a little bit about what their week looked like in terms of timetabling, and how much was in-person and online?

I was also wondering whether anyone knows whether the programme will be going fully online due to Omicron?

Thank you so much for all your help in advance!

What do firms mean by 'We review applications on a rolling-basis'?

Talking about White & Case's vacation scheme applications in specific. Do they mean that they send offers on a first-come first served basis? Or that they review applications during the application window, but send out offers after the application deadline?

Really hoping to get an answer on this asap, and happy holidays!

Presentation at AC

Hi all,

I have an Assessment Centre at a regional firm in January. We have to prepare a 5-10 minute presentation on a subject of our choice. The brief is quite broad - 'it is a chance to showcase your personality/interests and to make it fun and interesting.'

Do you think it is best to present on a topic that is 'intellectual/academic'? The topic that I would probably be most interested/comfortable with is my hobby, which is football. Do you think this would be too rudimentary to discuss at an assessment centre?

SQE

Hi I was wondering if anyone is doing the SQE this year and if they could speak on how they're finding the workload I'm trying to figure out if I'd be able to work part-time alongside it. Alternatively, if anyone did the accelerated LPC and managed to work part-time could you also please tell me about how intense you found that and how many hours you would recommend working or if you would just recommend focusing on the course.

Finally, anyone who moved to London for the LPC with the help of their firm did you find that the maintenance your firm gave you covered your time there?

Thanks, xx

Hello from a finalist desperate to land a TC :/

Hi!
I'm a finalist at Durham studying law, who's pretty stressed about the prospect of finishing uni with no job lined up haha.
I applied for tonnes of vac schemes last year and never got to interview stage for any (in hindsight my applications were poor). Now, my confidence is definitely crushed, and I'm finding it difficult applying to firms with no legal work experience (just lots of paid jobs!) and a low attendance of open days and careers events (due to slight laziness in my first two years).

I'm interested in large international firms (magic circle, ashurst, baker mckenzie, etc.)!
Any help would be appreciated and much needed :)

Law Firm Application

Can someone please review these answers (limit 100 words)?

Note: I am applying for a Trainee Associate position in a corporate law firm.

1. WHAT ARE THE KEY DIFFERENCES BETWEEN A SHARE PURCHASE AGREEMENT AND A SHAREHOLDERS’ AGREEMENT?
- SPA is entered in between the Seller and Buyer of the shares and outlines the particulars as to the quantum and price of the shares. SHA is entered in between a company and the shareholders. It outlines the rights and duties of both parties.

2. WHAT ARE THE DIFFERENT MODES THROUGH WHICH OVERSEAS FUNDING CAN BE RAISED BY AN INDIAN COMPANY?
- Two sources of overseas funding are Equity and Debt. Equity Funding can be raised either through FDI/FPI/FVCI route and Debt Funding can be raised via Loans/Borrowings (ECB) or Debt Instruments per the FEM (DI) Regulations, 2019.

3. IN AN ACQUISITION, WOULD YOU CONSIDER THE EQUITY VALUE OR ENTERPRISE VALUE OF THE COMPANY? WHY?
- The enterprise value is the net cost of acquiring the firm's equity, paying off all debt, and receiving cash. It is the same as owning a non-levered company. Therefore, the enterprise model is a more appropriate choice when valuing a business. or
- Enterprise model allows avoiding the difficulties associated with estimating the impact of the firm’s borrowing decisions on earnings (as the case with the equity model). Therefore, the enterprise model is a more appropriate choice when valuing an entire business, as such is the case in acquisition.

4. Describe a Law or a Judgement that has influenced you as an Advocate? (elaborate your answer in 75- 100 words)
- I am not sure how to approach this question.

Clifford Chance TC on hold?

Hi everyone,

I recently applied for Clifford Chance's TC and got an email saying:

"We have carefully considered your application and unfortunately we are not able to invite you to the next stage on this occasion, however we thought your application was very strong and we would like to keep your application on hold. We will be in touch no later than April next year to let you know if we would like to invite you to interview."

Has this happened to anyone else? I'm just curious because I've never heard of a law firm do this.

LPC Start Date

Hi all,

I apologise if this had already been addressed, but I couldn't find an answer to this in any previous thread.

Do firms usually state within their TC offers if they have a preference for which date you enroll upon the LPC, or does this information usually come later?

For context my TC starts in March 2024 and my offer only indicates the location/branch where I must study.

Thank you in advance for any help.

Challenges facing clients interview question

Hi, I have an upcoming CC interview and am struggling to answer the possible interview question 'what challenges are our clients facing?', mainly because of how broad it is. The trends which immediately come to mind are ESG, the impact of Covid and supply chain issues, is it worth focusing on maybe 2 of these and looking at broad themes? I'm conscious of not wanting to bore my interviewer with a really long answer but equally I think a broad question like this might require a more substantial answer?

Self-fund SQE prep course vs wait for TC offer

Hey everyone.

I have found a few topics around this but none with my exact situation. I am a final year mature non law student and am currently in my first VS/TC application process. Ideally I want to start my SQE prep ASAP so probably in Sept 2022 as that is when BPP and University of Law begin their courses. I could also go with BARBRI of course, which is cheaper but I will not have access to postgrad funding.

These are the questions I have: firstly, should I wait for the results of this application cycle before accepting a place on an SQE prep course (I suspect the answer to this is yes). In my excited hurry I actually applied to both BPP and University of Law so hold offers for both their SQE preps. I know they are basically businesses, so am I correct in saying that if I did not accept their offers now then I shouldn't have a problem re-applying in a few months and getting accepted again?

Secondly, if I fail to get a TC offer this cycle (which I am aware is a good chance), should I go ahead with an SQE course beginning in Sept 2022 anyway so that I can complete the SQE exams sooner, or is it better to just hold off on those courses altogether until I can get funding? I have enough savings to self-fund but of course I would rather get funded by a law firm.

Thanks you guys, I hope someone can help! :)

Should I link my answer here back to the law firm?

I'm currently answering the question 'At RPC we work in a collaborative, forward thinking environment. Provide an example when you have demonstrated your ability to collaborate or have shown yourself to be forward thinking. You may want to make references to your hobbies, interests and/or work experience to illustrate your answer' (300 words).

I've got three examples that will take up 100 words each. My approach is to outline how I was 'collaborative' or 'forward thinking' by outlining a scenario, describing how I tackled it and explaining my thought-process in detail. I'm trying to follow the 'show don't tell' approach.

I'm wondering if RPC wants me to add the extra step of linking how my experience relates to working for them? I'm worried about doing this because the question doesn't ask this of me, so I'm assuming the recruiters just want me to discuss my experiences and then they can judge for themselves if I come across as someone who meets their 'collaborative' and 'forward thinking' values.

Side question: do I say 'as Events Manager for x' or 'as events manager for x', I'm not sure if capitalisation of my post gets points deducted for grammar.

Choosing a TC start date

Hi everyone! Super pleased to say that after completing my winter vac scheme, I have been offered a TC at a firm that I really like!

I have (very surprisingly) been offered TC start dates in 2023, I have the option of either March or September. The thing that makes this choice difficult for me is that if I choose the March intake I will be in the firm's last batch of LPC trainees and would start the Accelerated LPC in July 2022. Whereas if I go for September then I'd be doing the SQE as part of the firm's City Consortium programme with BPP, and would start the SQE prep in September 2022.

I've attended a couple of events discussing LPC vs SQE and the LPC seems like it would be "easier", in terms of the assessment style and the fact that I wouldn't need to revise my old core law modules again, which I would have to do for the SQE 1. My TC terms have specified that all modules are to be passed at the first attempt.

I am however hesitating on picking the earlier start date as I have also been offered a policy role with the Civil Service to start in January, in a department that is relevant to an area of law that is of great interest to me. It's a great opportunity that I'm keen to take on before starting my law course / TC. If I go for the earlier March 2023 intake I don't think it's really worth accepting the role as it would mean I only have about 6 months in it, which seems a bit too short to be worth it.

Any thoughts / advice would be greatly appreciated :) @Jessica Booker keen to hear your thoughts as well!

Clifford Chance TC Virtual Assessment Day 2022

Hi everyone,

It may sound like a very general question but do you have any advice on the Clifford Chance training contract assessment? It's my very first assessment day so would be great to hear from someone who experienced it previously.

The assessment will comprise an individual timed written exercise and one 75-minute interview (incl. commercial question) with a Partner and Senior Associate.

Thank you!
