Vacation Scheme Logistics: What should I expect?

Hello everyone,

I've got a winter VS coming up very soon, which will be the first one I ever attend. I've read through the past TCLA threads on how to prepare behaviourally, but I would really appreciate some perspective on what to expect logistically.

Pre-VS:
- Should I expect to receive an itinerary for the VS before the first day? Would it be appropriate to ask for one?
- Will I know who else is in my cohort, and are we expected to get in touch before the VS?
- The VS is in a different country, so I'll be living in a hotel for the two weeks. Is there anything other than the essentials that I should pack, e.g.: should I expect for there to be an active/outdoor social?

VS:
- What kind of tasks should I expect to be doing, and is there any way to prepare beyond the general commercial awareness prep?
- How booked up is the schedule outside of work hours and on the weekend in terms of socials?

I understand that it's probably best not to sweat the minor stuff, but I was curious and as this is my first VS I feel like I have no idea what to expect.

Thanks in advance :)

Leaving 'If you intend to take or have taken the PGDL/GDL/CPE/JD' section blank

Apologies if a similar thread has been posted previously.
I was wondering if leaving the 'If you intend to take or have taken the PGDL/GDL/CPE/JD' section of the application completely blank looks bad to a recruiter? My conundrum is that if I do not get a firm to fund the PGDL, I will not take the PGDL. Instead, I would take a 40-week SQE Barbri prep course and then the SQE exams (due to financial reasons). Do you think I should fill it in and select 'place not confirmed' (so that there is something written there) or just leave it blank?

If anyone could help or advise me on this, that would be great! :)

Road to becoming a Corporate Lawyer.

Hello generous people, lawyers and not.
I am studying Law LLB and I am 1st year.
I wish to pursue as a Corporate Lawyer, I have learned the key facts and areas of its interest etc merging and business's.

Currently everything is unclear for me,
How do I pursue to this career?
Apparently there is no PLC required anymore, or should I undergo it after my degree?
Also what is the best option after receiving a BA in Law? Should I do Masters or can I just go straight to the corporate path?
Also can I work straight away after leaving University?

I have many questions but these are the most important ones.

Thanks.

Work experience section on applications

Hi,

I am currently in the process of making applications to various law firms and I am confused as to how to describe my work experience in the designated section on the application form. Normally I'd approach this by highlighting the skills I developed but then it would be repetitive as I usually draw on work experience when answering specific application questions as well. For an example, when justifying why me in the application, I will say that I have developed X and Y skills when working for Z company. But then I do not know what to put in the designated work experience section as I cannot put the same thing but if not then I would not know what to focus on.

If anyone would be so kind to offer me some advice, I'd really appreciate it!

Spelling mistake in Application forms

Hi everyone,

Has anyone had any experience of making a spelling mistake and still getting through? Moreover, does anyone also know the spelling policy of A&O? (Do they throw your application into the bin if they see one mistake?)

In my work experience section, I wrote: "organized" instead of "organised" and the same for "analysed" (I wrote (analyzed).

I am a bit annoyed because I spent two months on this application and these are the only two mistakes that I have made. Furthermore, because both mistakes are made in my first "work experience" position, I am worried that they see this and decide to not go further with my application.

I know that what is done is done but I wanted to hear about any of your experiences please?

Thanks

White & Case Application Form

Hi,

I was wondering how many work experiences should I put in for the White & Case application form and if 3 or 4 sentences will be enough for this section?
They also have a question Please use the space below to provide details of any careers events you have attended e.g. insight days, workshops, presentations etc. These do not need to be White & Case specific. (Max. 350 words) but I have not attended any White & Case events. Will this put me at a disadvantage or do they place more emphasis on the Cover Letter?

Entertainment/Media Law 2021/2022/2023

Hello everyone :)

Just to introduce myself: I'm a postgraduate studying an MA in Law, after finishing a three-year degree in Music Management. Currently aspiring to focus either at a boutique firm, or in-house, within music. The dream job would be to secure a legal internship at one of the majors (Sony, Warner or Universal). Also really interested in Spotify, Apple Music, etc.
Other interests include fashion, media, technology (NFT's and how tech is used in the art world).

Would love to get to know anyone else who is interested in similar areas!

Commute or Hotel

Hi All,

I recently secured a Winter Vacation Scheme with a city firm and I am wondering if it is best to commute or stay in a hotel.

The commute would be
  1. A 30 minute drive.
  2. 30-40 minute train.
  3. Then a 15 minute tube to the office.
Is this feasible every day or is it too risky? Does anyone have any experience with commuting for vacation schemes against staying in a hotel.

Thanks in advance.

Hello everyone! :)

Hello everyone! :)

I am a recent non-law graduate, I studied politics and international relations for my BA and I've just completed my MSc in Security Studies at UCL. I am aiming to secure a summer vacation scheme and hopefully the much coveted training contract!

I am keen to improve my performance on the Watson-Glaser test. At the minute, my speed is not great nor is my ability to focus on such little pieces of information. I would like any tips on technique with these tests! :)

Best Wishes,
Miriam

2nd year law student query on a legal career within the corporate world

Hi all!

I have come across many forums that relate to law to try and get some general advice on what direction I should be focusing on to have a legal career.

My situation is very difficult, partly due to covid, but I do want to take most accountability for the reason why I put myself in such a situation.

I am a 2nd year law student at a university within central London currently undertaking my LLB bachelor. To give some context on my current position, I did my a level from 2018-2019. I finished my first year and went onto start my second year at a level but covid hit and my a levels had been cancelled resulting in our teachers marking our grades. I was marked a Merit in IT, C in Criminology and an E in law... yes an E... Both covid and my lack of enthusiasm for the subjects that I did for a level hit me hard but there is no one but myself to blame so I took it up on my chin and moved on...

After finishing my first year with around 70% I have entered my second year with a goal of pushing hard and getting a first. I am working 15+ hours a day to try and achieve this goal. I’m in a situation where I want to peruse a career in corporate law within a magic circle firm but I’m not sure if that will be possible...

I have set myself a plan that I will want to take a masters after university at a more prestigious university then the one that I’m currently in. Along with this I was contemplating doing a PHD at a prestigious university within London but upon looking at another thread on here and coming to the conclusion that it may be too academic and firms may not see it as an advantage of other students, I have decided to hold onto this idea until I get close to finishing my masters.

The whole idea about why I wanna do a phd and a masters, to some extent, depend on two reasons...

1) to essentially try and stand out and...

2) show that I am in fact dedicated in having a legal career within the corporate world, despite the mistakes I made at a levels.. in other words I want to show that I took accountability and acted on my mistakes..

To be plain and simple the reason that I am interested in Corporate law is that it is something that I find interesting and it pays very well. Upon doing my uni work I have been on the look out for various of opportunities that my university forwards me, in the hopes of getting some experience that relate to the corporate world.

Hopefully I can get some general feedback and I’ll make sure I reply if there are any questions regards anything that I have or haven’t talked about.
