    If you are travelling from far away and it makes your train ticket cheaper travelling the night before, many firms will cover it up to a certain limit/budget.

    Then yes, does vary from firm to firm (and sometimes even from reviewer to reviewer, depending what their preferences are). I wouldn’t worry about tripping up occasionally or answers sometimes cutting off though - I have seen plenty of candidates get through and do this occasionally.

It could easily be a benchmark where individual answers are scored and then you have to achieve a certain score to get through to the next stage, or it could be a simple yes or no decision based on the “interviewers”...
