LLM International Finance Law vs Corporate Law LLM

I am undecided about the next two LLM programmes, they have similar options (i.e., at UCL)

International Banking and Finance Law

Corporate Law

I feel more attracted to the International Banking and Finance programme; however, this area may result too broad, and more focused towards an advisory role.

I would be glad to hear your thoughts about the following:

Is corporate law more specialised -practical- than the Finance programme?

What do you think of both programmes in terms of career and employability?

Thank you!

Hi everyone!

I've received an email from Womble Bond Dickinson about taking their assessment as part of their next stage. This includes a numerical and verbal reasoning questions, situational judgement tests and finally a video interview. If anyone has any experience or advice I would really appreciate it please!

Thank you!

Work Experience in Finance or Legal firm?

Hi everyone,

I have a specific question regarding my circumstances. I started late in this year's application cycle, so I was not able to secure a vacation scheme. I am from Dubai, and I have been trying to obtain some work experience back home. I might be able to secure a work placement at a Magic Circle firm for 2 weeks to a month during the summer, but I also may be getting offered a 3 month Finance internship at a global digital payments technology company. I believe I would learn a lot more from the latter and it would help me stand out, but however this would mean I have no legal experience. I am heading into my final year as a law undergraduate (I want to try and secure a TC next year) and I was looking for advice regarding which should I opt for as they both overlap.

I would appreciate any and all help with this!

Advice on SIPs

Hi All, I'm lucky enough to have been accepted onto some SIPs for 2023...however the dates mean that I can't do them all, leaving me with 2 options. Option 1 is an 11 week internship with a Tier 1 corporate firm and Option 2 is to do internships of 4 weeks each at 2 other firms (also both Tier 1 corporate) - all 3 come with a guaranteed TC interview.
My instinct is to go for Option 2 to double my chances, however it also feels like a mistake to turn down the 11-week option as I've heard that such a long SIP will almost certainly lead to a TC? If anyone has advice on what the best option to secure a TC might be I'd greatly appreciate it.

Please help - writing an application for an open day when you missed another one - is this okay or will I reflect poorly?

I want to attend an Open Day at Shearman & Sterling. I had been accepted to their Open Day in November, however during the week some personal circumstances/illness came up and there was no way I could attend. I emailed them as soon as I could, however never got a response. I really do want an insight into the firm, and they have another upcoming Open Day. Should I email the firm asking if I could apply? How similar/different does my application need to be? Can I actually apply? Any insight would be really appreciated, thank you in advance!

Free Workshop with American Express: Understanding the role of an in-house lawyer

Hi All,

We don't really talk much about in-house roles here and it's certainly something I didn't really understand why I was applying, but I suspect it will become a more common entry point in the future. That's why I thought it would be interesting to run a free workshop for members of the TCLA community on understanding the role of an in-house lawyer.

The legal team at American Express have kindly offered to run this session. If you can spare 1 minute, I'd be grateful if you could complete this very short form so I can better understand what you find useful to be covered. This information will be sent directly to the team.

Thank you!
Jaysen

Join our next cohort of the TCLA Academy: develop your commercial and legal awareness

Learning about the business and financial world can be mind-boggling. It feels like there is an infinite amount to learn and it is difficult to know where to start. With so much jargon out there and with commercial law being so vast, you might question: what do corporate lawyers actually do? What do litigation and structured finance lawyers do?

But what if you had the answers to such questions? Imagine if you could speak in the language of your future clients and could confidently articulate your understanding of what different lawyers do.

I remember feeling like this outcome was a distant pipe dream. However, this goal is well within your reach and you do not have to face it alone. By joining the TCLA Academy, you can learn how to confidently approach any commercial question at interview. You will get to train with experts - from partners to senior professionals – through interactive sessions, and be supported every step of the way.
