Struggling with commercial awareness

This is my first application cycle so I'm getting my head around all the different aspects of the application process. One I'm really struggling with is my commercial awareness.

I've identified how I can get the information e.g. FT/Watson's Daily/Ziplaw etc but what's the step beyond just reading the information? Is there a framework that I can use that gets me thinking how do these stories impact a law firm/client?

International Students right to work during the Winter/Spring vacation scheme

Hi guys, I am an international students who hold a tier-4 visa: winter/spring scheme usually overlap with my university term dates: and my tier-4 visa only allows me to work 20 hours maximum a week. I would like to ask how did past people try to resolve this problem and legally work on a winter/spring vacation scheme? Or International students can only do summer vacation scheme. Please help me out with this, thank you for your time to read this.

Stephenson Harwood VS video interview

Hello, I got through to the next stage of SH’s VS however they have changed the process so none of the current trainees can help me. The instructions are “This interactive assessment doesn’t require any prior specific knowledge or expertise, but we do advise you to have a calculator, paper and pen to hand and that you answer all the questions honestly” - does anyone know what to expect? There is also a video interview right after the first assessment. What do you guys think are the best 4 questions to prepare?

Commercial law vs Company law ?

Hi @Jessica Booker , @axelbeugre , need to give a preliminary choice for 3rd year LLB electives. Having a hard time understanding the difference between these two modules - company law and commercial law and figuring out which is more interesting and relevant to the work we will do as commercial solicitors in the city ?

Thank you.

BCLP assessment centre

Hi all,

I have an assessment centre at BCLP this week and was wondering if anyone has done one recently and might have any tips? The case study preparation and presentation sounds relatively straightforward but they also mention a marking up exercise, which I'm not sure what that is, as well as a final interview. Does anyone know what that final interview usually covers?

HSF First Year Workshop Application

Hi everyone!

I'm a first year student applying for HSF's first year workshops (application due 31/1). I was wondering if anyone would be free to help look over my application & see if there is anything I could be doing better? In particular I would like to make sure my answers are as tailored to HSF + as readable as possible. I would particularly welcome feedback from candidates who have successfully gained admission to the HSF workshops in previous years, or from anyone who has experience in graduate recruitment (perhaps @Jessica Booker could help with this?) Please reply or DM me and I will send over my answers.

Thank you very much for your time :)

Self-funded PGDL, got 0.75 points off a distinction. Am I screwed?

I anticipate some comments saying I should be proud of myself for getting a 69.25 on the PDGL, but I feel like that's a bit condescending given that so many people get distinctions. I know for a fact that I was undergoing some personal circumstances (like facing a potential eviction notice) whilst taking exams that bumped my mark, but getting 69 on Company Law when I'm applying to corporate law firms really makes me feel like I should consider something else. I feel really quite depressed about my marks because I already felt self-conscious for self-funding, not having a TC, and now having to apply to TCs with this stain on my history. I feel like I am going to waste my time applying to some firms due to my PGDL score. This and I won't be able to go back to the UK for about 5 months because I'm visiting family in another region of the world, so it's not like I can get UK job experience ASAP to make up for it. I feel really anxious, unable to sleep, really disappointed, and like I'm past my prime.. I know I'm 24 and people can get TCs when they're 30 or 40 -- I just feel really bummed and need some advice as to whether or not I need to rejig my expectations. Thanks everyone in advance for reading this word vomit, really needed to get it out of my chest <3

Weightmans Graduate Solicitor Apprenticeship/ Training Contract Application Advice

I wanted some advice on this question:

Weightmans recently launched ‘See the Possibility.’ Further details can be found on our website, but in essence ‘See the Possibility’ is “an articulation of our positive mindset, capturing something that’s always been part of our firm. It underpins our purpose to drive change, grow together, and turn obstacles into opportunities. To make the most of the incredible skills we all have.”

What does ‘See the Possibility’ mean to you as a potential trainee/graduate apprentice, and how can it help our lawyers to deliver a high-quality service to our clients? (Max Word count: 500)

WG Question

Hi all,

Have a query about a practice WG question. If anyone could share whether this is a strong or weak argument, that would be great!

'Would managers' performance be enhanced if they spent one week a year in a junior role?'

Proposed Argument: 'Yes; nobody, not even a manager, really knows what a job is like until they have actually done it themselves.'

Thumbs up for strong, down for weak, any explanation would also be great :D
