Hogan lovells paralegal interview help

Hi everyone, I have a first stage paralegal zoom interview coming up next week.

The HR administrator let me know that the interview with GR will of "job duties of this role and your previous experiences" and will only last 30 minutes. Does anyone know what sort of questions they might specifically ask? Does this mean that it is a competency based interview, and would I use STAR?

I've not had any previous experience with any of the job duties included but am very eager and willing to learn as it will be my first legal job.
How can I get this across clearly if they ask me "do you know how to do XYZ"? Should I say that I don't have exact experience in doing these things but then give example of transferrable skills through positions of responsibility, extra curricular and hospitality work experience?

I've also applied to paralegal roles with other law firms, but have not heard back yet. Is it likely that they might ask if I have applied with anyone else? Would it seem like I just want any job and am not interested in this firm only if I say yes? Should I say I haven't heard back yet as I've only applied in the last two weeks? When asking this question, what are they really looking out for..?

People say to ask for feedback after an interview, does this mean I should ask for feedback after every stage (assuming I get through to more stages after this)?
If yes, at what point do I ask? Would it be when they ask if I have any further questions, or during the post-interview thank you email?
What are some good paralegal questions to ask at the end of an interview? Would it be a bit different to questions for VS/TCs?

Sorry for so many questions, it would help a lot if anyone has answers to any part!

Kennedys SQE application

Hey all!

I recently applied for the Kennedys SQE program. I was asked to complete an SJT. I completed this and two days later I received a feedback report. This report highlighted the qualities needed to succeed in the program. However, I had 3 strengths outlined and one weakness.

I have tried calling the team a few times as it was not clear whether or not I was proceeding to the next stage. It has been 12 days since receiving the report.

Should I now take this as a rejection?

Vinson & Elkins, Video Interview, 2022

Hi all,

Has anyone completed the Video Interview for Vinson & Elkins for the 2021-22 cycle? If so, I would like to ask two questions.

Firstly, are you allowed to record your answer as many times as you like? (this was the case last year, unsure if this is so this year and am hesitant to commence the process prematurely.)

Secondly, how would you recommend preparing? Any insight into the nature of the questions asked and how to prepare would be much appreciated.

Thanks.

What is a law firm's business services sector?

I have an interview tomorrow (oops) to be an assistant (not paralegal, subordinate to this) at Mishcon de Reya. It's to be an assistant personnel at their Business Services office. I assumed this that just client-facing office, secretarial, because when looking at their website there's no "Business Services" page. Now I'm freaking out. Help??

HSF Spring 2022 VS AC Experience

Hi everyone,

I’m going to reply y’all altogether since the questions were similar, I hope you don’t mind. I thought it might be helpful for other people as well. So I applied for the HSF Spring 2022 VS early Dec 21, received the online assessment a couple days later and an invitation to the AC mid Jan 22. I’m a non-law, non-UK applicant that did the PGDL already.

My AC was entirely virtual, so no case study for me (thank goodness), the structure was as follows (note that the order of interviews might be different for you), all the interviews are 35mins long:
  • Welcome talk from GR and a partner
  • Competency interview with a senior assoc
  • Personal scenario interview 1 with a partner
  • Personal scenario interview 2 with a partner
For the welcome talk, it was pretty basic. GR will welcome you to the virtual room and the partner will do a small talk about their work and HSF in general. You do get small windows to ask questions to the GR and partner, so that was nice. I think the partner might also be doing interviews that day, so it’s worth it to note their names and practice area.

The competency interview was the most nerve wrecking for me. The associate interviewing me asked a lot of questions but they were all questions you’d have expected while preparing for an AC.
  • Why city commercial law
  • Why HSF
  • Why did you study your degree and do you think that puts you at an advantage or disadvantage (I did a non-law degree)
  • Tell me about a time where you held a leadership position and how you led the team to overcome challenges and the results
  • Tell me about a time where you had multiple deadlines and what you did
  • Tell me about a time where you had to work with someone with a different opinion
  • Tell me about a time where you were part of team and something went wrong
  • What challenges do you think you will face during your VS/TC
  • How do you think your second language can help as a commercial solicitor
She emphasised that it was important to give examples, preferably within the last three years. I don’t think I gave enough examples and some were definitely way past the three year period. But she was really really nice and patient with me. I definitely waffled a little. I think it’s important to have a good structure and use signposting language.

I’ve read that the personal scenario interview is hard to prepare for. And tbh, a little. Both partners were extremely nice and tried to put me at ease, plus they do say that they aren’t looking for the right answers, there might not even be any, they just want to know your thought process. My interviewers introduced themselves and then I introduced myself. They then gave me a fictional scenario, I asked to take notes, which I think really helped to collect my thoughts and structure my answer. The first interview was about a small business wanting to expand [redacted]. It’s really not as scary as it sounds because the partner does go into detail about the scenario and drop hints here and there.

The second interview was tougher, it was about drafting X and he was quite specific in the sense that he wanted to know how I would actually write it, the wording and definitions etc. Which I knew nothing about so I just gave pretty basic definitions in my own words. I talked about tax at some point and was questioned how I would actually go about doing it.

To prepare for the scenario interviews, I strongly recommend watching A&O anatomy of a deal on youtube, like that basically structured my answer for the first scenario. For the second one, I had to think on the spot and it really does help to walk them through your process. Like I literally went, “okay, I have no idea how to draft X but I think the first thing to consider is what problem we are trying to address with X” and then I reiterated his question. I didn’t give the answer that he was looking for AT ALL, but he seemed okay with that and then at the end we had a short discussion on what he would have done. Both interviewers were keen to listen to what I had to say and I did raise questions as well, so it was more of a discussion than a presentation. At the end you do get some time to ask them any questions you want. The 35 mins went by really quickly actually.

In general, I prepared by writing down answers for expected competency questions and then writing them on post-its and plastered it on my wall in front of me. I also made sure to have the details of all the cases that I mentioned in my application and answers, in case they asked but they didn’t. I read up on basic contract terms as well. Overall, it was honestly enjoyable, I like having the discussions and thinking on my feet.

They also got back to me super quickly, in the evening and told me I was successful so I can’t freaking wait for the VS!!!

Qualifying from abroad to work in England and Wales

Hi everyone,

I'm Sebastián, Colombian qualified Lawyer since 2017. I am currently interested in doing an LLM in order to practice as a lawyer in England in the near future. As I hold a foreign law degree I would have to follow the SQE route to practice as a solicitor. I've checked LLM Legal Practice (SQE1&2) from University of Law and Law and Legal Practice: SQE 1 Preparation Course - LLM from Nottingham Trent University.

The thing is that even if a complete one of those courses, I would need to complete two years of qualifying work experience (QWE) before to apply to be admitted as a solicitor. I know that getting work experience in England as a foreign lawyer is tough and I'm not sure if by holding one of the LLM that I mentioned, would have a good chance of getting a job as a paralegal once I finish the course.

Taking into account that I would be paying for the course myself, I just wondering if would be better pursuing an LLM General or in International Law from another university in order to apply for a paralegal position, get qualifying work experience, and then get sponsorship from a company to do SQE preparation courses and exams.

I know that I could do just a PGDL as an alternative in order to do the SQE courses but I'm interested in pursue an LLM because it could enhance my professional carrer in Colombia, which could help me in the future in case I want to return to my country, and that is why I am contemplating the idea of doing the courses I mentioned, which meet all these desires.

Could someone give me some advice on the type of course I should choose, according to my situation? I would appreciate it very much.

Thanks!!!

LPC Life in London?

Hi,

I have a tc with a firm and must complete the fast track LPC in London. I get a grant from the firm, but this is not enough to cover 12 months rent. The course is only 7 months, so I assume the sum is meant to just cover costs for that period.

I just wondered, where do most people live when doing the LPC at Holborn?
Do people move to London for the full twelve months, or do they just do the seven and then do something else?

Is it common to paralegal for a while after LPC?

Student loans available when doing a LPC LLM paid for via training contract

I will Be starting the LPC in September and will be doing it with the additional legal practice LLM . As I have a training contract and it will all be paid for will I still be eligible for student finance?

has anyone who is in the same situation for. Student finance and how much did you get ?

I have heard everyone gets the max of 11k but I was wondering if that would be different if your actual tuition fees are being covered ?

Written exercise format, especially letters and emails!

Hi, I think it's quite likely that I will need to write an email or letter in an AC. Are there resources about the formatting? Details such as: (1) always use "Dear Ms/Mr X"? (2) do we need to greet them? such as "Good morning" "I hope you're doing well"? (3) how to end the email? "Please let me know should you have any further questions?" (4) "Best regards"? "Yours sincerely"? "Yours faithfully"? (5) should the subject always be a noun?
These are the issues I can think of but welcome to add more!!

Concerned Scottish Applicant

Hi,

I'm hoping someone can give some clarity on the timing of TC awards for the major UK/International firms as I think I've messed up the application process to put it lightly.

To give some background, after a decade working in the energy sector in client, project & commercial management positions I decided to start my career over in the legal services industry. As I intend to practice in Scotland I'm undertaking a 2 year accelerated LLB which I started in September 2021. Given the recruitment cycle of the majors I was a bit blindsided by the application process and didn't really know I had to apply until the deadlines were upon me, so, in my naivety I only applied to 3 firms. These being the ones which I was extremely interested in working for and hence prioritised. I've since been rejected from one post VI and haven't heard anything at all from the other two but I applied right at the deadline which was several weeks ago now so I'm expecting PFO's imminently.

The rationale behind the low application count was based on my understanding that my first year would just be a trial run and if I was to secure a Vac scheme it would be a bonus but my second year would be the make or break in terms of securing a VC and then hopefully a TC.

However, it's now dawning on me that I may have misunderstood things as it seems that all of the major law firms recruit 2 years in advance.

Is my understanding correct? If I were to apply to these firms again next year am I correct to presume it would be for a Summer 2023 VC and September 2025 TC?

If so does that effectively rule out a TC with a large full-service firm without a gap year 2024-2025 or are there any other avenues open to me?

Any thoughts/suggestions greatly appreciated!
