BPP GDL

Hi everyone!

My name is Anna I am an online distance learning student (for now before moving to London) at the BPP doing my GDL. I am feeling quite lonely in all this process and wanted to ask if there are more students doing this or if you are a student there and know perhaps if there are any groups on social media for the GDL students at the BPP?
Thanks so much! :)

Welcome to our Community Manager - Alice G

Hi All,

Just a quick note to say @Alice G, our longstanding community manager, is now taking on a more formalised role within TCLA. As you may have seen, she is now a future trainee at a magic circle firm, and will be around in the forum to share her wealth of experiences having been through both the good times and the bad!

The one thing I'd add: please avoid private messaging Alice unless it's a particularly sensitive issue that cannot be posted in the forum. If you have a question for Alice specifically, you can post in a thread and tag her (the same goes for me or Jess). We try to have this rule so we can keep all the information/advice/resources available for everyone to access, as well as making the best use of our time.

I hope you'll join me in welcoming her again!

Best,

Jaysen

Answering interview questions

Hello everyone,

I have an upcoming interview and would appreciate any guidance on this matter.

My application included answers to the questions "why you" and "how did you come to the decision to apply to us". Suppose they ask these questions (or any application question) in the interview albeit with different wording, will I be "marked down" if I answer using the same/similar points I stated on my application?

Thanks :)

IF WE DONT HAVE THE GRADES...

If we don't have the grades at A-Levels- I have one A+ ( I got 91/100 IN ENGLISH SO I DONT KNOW WHAT GRADE THAT WOULD BE IN UK) & 2 Cs (69 ON 100 IN CHEMISTRY AND 63 IN COMPUTER SCIENCE), DOES IT MAKE SENSE TO ABSOLUTELY NOT APPLY AT FIRMS WHICH ASK FOR 2 As and a B.- I feel my rest of the application is solid- should I go for it? ( I will ultimately end up getting a 2:1 at Uni very easily but during my first year I got 40/100 in a few modules), now I am getting 65 on 100.
Should I apply to magic circle?

NOT A STELLAR ACADEMIC RECORD

Have there been instances of students who don't have the required grades at A- levels, have a 2:1 at university but have lower grades in key modules like contract company torts, making it to Magic Circle law firms? If, barring my grades, I can absolutely show my worth in the rest of the application and with solid mitigating circumstances, do I have a shot?

King & Spalding Vacation Scheme Interview 2020

King & Spalding Vacation Scheme Interview 2020

By Anonymous

1. Presentation + interview (30 minutes for both)

The presentation was to be prepared ahead of AC (one week notice) with the presentation handouts (if any) to be sent to the grad team two days before the AC. We were asked to prepare a 5 minute presentation on a recent news topic that we find interesting and how it relates to the legal sector and what opportunities it presents to the firm. Even though it was said to last roughly 5 minutes, it was not actually timed.
The first part of the conversation with partner and associate revolved around the presentation, so prepare for potential follow-up questions.
The interview part was quite short due to the lack of time, the questions were standard "Tell me about yourself", "Why did you decide to apply to K&S?", etc.

2. Negotiation exercise (30 minutes)

We received a scenario whereby a small town received a fund of £50mln and had to divide it between different investments which would make the town more attractive and stronger economically. Everybody (about 8 people in the room) was assigned a project (e.g. a car park) which had its value on it and was given 10 minutes to prepare a 2 minute pitch to the room convincing others to agree to their project.
This was followed by some 10 minutes of discussion on which 3 project the town should invest in.

3. Letter writing (1 hour)

Let me start by saying, it was NOT your usual letter writing exercise that you would expect! The scenario had little to do with legal knowledge but more with making convincing arguments in general so there is little you can do to prepare for it.

4. Lunch

We were told that this was an important part of the day, too!

Clifford Chance Vacation Scheme Interview 2020

Thanks to this anonymous candidate who shared this detailed insight. Tough questions here! If anything, this reflects the importance of staying up to date with topical news stories and reading around a topic (particularly here with Thomas Cook and CVA related questions).

Clifford Chance Vacation Scheme Interview 2020

Competency Interview (45 min)
  • Tell me about yourself?
    • Tangent about Competitive Food eating
  • Why CC?
    • [Follow up] How does that differentiate CC from other firms like A&O?
  • Issues facing CC’s clients? How are they positioned to counter these?
    • I said cyber security (my answer wasn’t all that focussed, more suited for the question of what will affect the firm most)
    • [Follow up] Any other issues?
    • I said AI and legal tech – shit answer
    • Maybe looming recession would have been a better
  • What other firms have you applied to and what have you felt going through the application process?
  • How do you deal under pressure?
  • Dealing with difficulty and what did you do to solve it?
  • Project you’ve worked towards and the steps you took
Case Study Interview (1 hour 15 min prep time, 45 min interview)

Case Study Bundle: About the liquidation of Thomas Cook. A few FT articles (Analysis article from the FT) and BBC news articles. Some more in-depth reports about AI biases and their consequences / in-direct consequences. [Redacted]

Case Brief:
  • Partner and you working on a case
  • [Redacted] is an online holiday provider, providing cheaper holiday bundles
  • Client is looking to acquire Thomas Cook’s retail portfolio
  • Partner had suggestions for the client and potential actions for the acquisition
    • 1) Using CVA’s to let go of leases on retail stores. Only retaining stores in key locations to reduce costs.
    • 3) Happy Retail to operate in Europe under the name Thomas Cook
    • 4) Using influencers on social media to appeal to a younger audience
    • 5) Using AI facial recognition in their stores
  • Task 1: (a) What you understood about the downfall of Thomas Cook from the bundle? (b) To go in depth / raise issues with any action that partner was supposing and suggest any other alternatives to achieve the same aim?
  • Task 2: Board member emailing in asking what is algorithmic bias? And if we were to implement it into these AI systems in our shops what issues will we need to consider? (It pointed towards a specific article in the bundle)
Questions (45 min Q&A):

Partner and associate had a set list of questions covering a few topics that they read off and asked you. No presentation like previous years
  • What went wrong with Thomas Cook? Why did it fail?
  • Similar company that wants to acquire them. Why? Are there differences between the two companies?
  • Drew upon the similarities and differences between the companies and how that affected them / their goals?
  • Do you know about the Chinese conglomerate Fosun’s bailout package?
  • Why didn’t the government bailout Thomas Cook?
  • Can you think of a similar company in the news this week that is undergoing something similar? (was referring to Flybe)
  • Why is Flybe getting a bail out? Whereas Thomas Cook did not
  • What are CVAs?
  • Got told what they are. Their use. In the Company Act
Thomas Cook would have contracts with hundreds of landlords to use their retail space. But because the company is going bankrupt, they cut a deal (75% vote) to decrease their rent payment and make a plan to repay less.
  • Fall of the high street: using CVAs
  • What are Credit Default Swaps and how are they used?
  • Issues surrounding AI technology in stores?
Where I failed?

· Commercial Awareness: knowing the basics of big headline stories, and what would interest lawyers e.g. how Thomas Cook failed and the legal / commercial implications on an acquisition of it

· Knowing the clients business

o Every issue you raise and solution you give, must be through the client’s eyes.

· Tactical communication

o ANYTHING you say, be prepared to talk about it more

Asking for Work

Hey all,

I just wanted to know what everyone thinks is the best way to ask for work. I've heard some people say that going around your department knocking on doors and asking isn't good but I've also heard some people say they think this helped them land a TC.

Other people have told me its better to reach out to someone when you're genuinely interested in the work they're doing so I'm a bit confused as to which would be the best approach to take.

Would be great to hear some thoughts

Thanks!

Interests including hobbies and sports

I would really appreciate some advice on how to answer a question like this:
Please give brief details of any interests including hobbies and sports. (250 words)

The question seems quite simple, but there is something that throws me off. Would work with different societies count as interests? How would I demonstrate any skills through hobbies or interests such as playing basketball?

BEST RESOURCES FOR BUILDING UP ON OUR COMMERCIAL AWARENESS: FROM SCRATCH

I am on the lowest chain of this Commercial Awareness bandwagon, I dont even know how money, oil prices , exchange rates work- can anyone suggest me all the resources that can take me from where I am currently to having commercial awareness like a trainee should have. Please mention each and everything you can think of as I have ample time to do it.
